Countess In Out to Aid VanBerg Cook Average Hard-Hitting Mare Has Nobility As Entry Mate at Detroit Today By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., June 29. Marion H. VanBerg, colorful Columbus, Nebr., turfman, and jockey Louis Cook, of Kona, Ky., a combination which perenially is high in the training and riding standings at Michigan Racing Association meetings, hold a royal chance to bolster their 1953 ratings tomorrow afternoon. VanBerg, who began the Monday card with 14 successful thoroughbreds, and Cook, a close second to Robert Lee Baird on the jockey ladder, are to play prominent roles in the featured Flat Rock Eastern Star purse. VanBerg will send out Countess In and Nobility in the six-furlong headliner, and Cook is to be at the reins on one of the Cornhusker State - owned entrants. Countess In, aged daughter of Count Gallahad and Reigh Helen, is a double winner at the current meeting, having registered over a fair band of sprinters here June 4, then came back for another victory in a mile and 70 yards overnight offering June 17. Nobility, lightly campaign thus far this year, was fairly close to such company as Cross Wave, Tidy Sum, Test Pattern, Is There and In My Bones, in a pair of engagements at Detroit. Nobility, a four -year-old gelded son of Supremus and Delicate, was beaten off in his last local appearance, bowing to Fern Gold, Lickety Cut and Bofaye in a mile race, decided in a slow 1:39. It is quite likely that VanBerg will send Countess In postward under Cook and he may pass the Tuesday test with Nobility. While the, VanBerg duo rates highly in the Flat Rock Eastern Star, several other entrants would be dangerous with the running of a top race. Brown Hotel Stables Arizona K a four-year-old Pharamond H.-sired gelding, won four races last year and the Louisville-owned sprinter worked well for the Tuesday feature. Along vith Arizona K., M. Andrews Pollys Delay, Mrs. Helen Rahaims speedy Green Saber, Wagner and Reibers King Wilson, and Duntreath Farms Anovas hold excellent chances for a part of the spoils. Mrs. Kitty Niles and D. Schreiber will start Bonrilla, Helen Racovitis silks are to be carried by Wait Up, Ypsilanti Stables Silence and Deal Me In, from the B. Burke barn, also are expected to go to the post in the Tuesday dash. Four-year-olds and older are to clash in the mile and one-sixteenth fourth, the eight furlongs fifth, and the mile and one-quarter "nightcap." The one mile seventh will bring out a near - capacity field of three - year - olds and should develop into quite an interesting contest. Triple Flight, Wilks Loss, Bonquest, Jay C, and Monroe J. appear well placed in the latter number. A crowd of over 10,000 turned out this sunny afternoon for the racing at the local course which was fast for the entire program. A. Ferraras New Orleans-owned Fighting Ike, with Robert Lee Baird at the reins, scored a front-running two-length victory in the five -furlong initial event, trimming 11 other two - year - olds. Fighting Ike stepped along in a commendable :59 and paid 4.40 straight. Royce, under the silks of C. Farist, won his second straight victory, defeating nine other useful platers in the three-quarters mile second race. Royce, smartly ridden, beat A. B. C. Stables favored Lucky Chips by a neck margin, while Mrs. Lottie Wolfs Sun Halo was along for third. Royce, clocked in 1:12, paid 9.20 and, coupled with Fighting Ike in the Daily Double, returned 7.20 in the special pool.
