Rejected Is Newest Star To Appear at Hollywood King Ranch Sophomore Annexes Westerner Over Filly, Fleet Khal HOLLYWOOD PARK, Ingfewood, Calif., June 29. King Ranchs Rejected is the newest star to appear on the western three-year-old front as a result of his triumph last Saturday in the 00,000 Westerner, at a mile and one-quarter. The brown son of Revoked and By Line, who is onyl a few races removed from both the claiming and maiden ranks, beat every good three-year-old in training in California, but under the conditions of the Westerner he had only to pick up 110 pounds and was in receipt of weight concessions from most of his opponents. No credit can be taken from the King Ranch colt, who ran the 10 furlongs in 2:01, but the real star of the race was the filly Fleet Khal, owned by Rex C. Ellsworth, who finished second, beaten only a length. Under 117 pounds, this daughter of Khaled was spotting Rejected seven actual pounds, and 12, when her sex allowance is considered. Further, she had the services of the less experienced Johnny Burton, while Rejected was being handled by the veteran Ralph Neves. Rejected served notice that he might be heard from in the Westerner when a short time earlier he finished second to Alis Gem in the Cinema Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth. He lost that race by a nose, chiefly because he ran out in the stretch. In the Westerner Rejected beat only one horse in the field of 11 away from the gate and he was a good distance back for half the race. Then, however, he began to work his way forward and as he turned into the homestretch he was in fifth position. Continuing on he moved inuto third place a furlong out and a little nearer the finish he took the lead which he held to the wire. Fleet Khal, winner of two previous stakes this meeting, gave an excellent account of herself and in finishing second was a good three lengths in front of A. J. Crevolins Imbros, who made all the pace and who showed the way to the final furlong. Fourth to complete the distance was Imbros stablemate Decorated. Rejected performed as part of an entry with Resistance, who, however, showed nothing. The W-L Ranchs Alis Gem, who won three straight stakes before taking part in the Westerner, was never a very serious factor and neither was Calumet Farms Chanlea, winner last winter of the Santa Anita Derby. Others in the Westerner were Calumets Right Bright, Mr. and Mrs. Harry James Laughin Louie, C. H. Jones Perfection and L. B. Mayers Lucrative. Sharing Westerner honors with Rejected and Neves was W. J. Hirsch, who prepared the colt for his race. The stake was worth 5,500 net to the winner. Last fall Rejected graduated from the maiden class in a race out of which he could have been claimed for ,000. Now hes probably not for sale. I
