The Dancer Works Mile For Metropolitan Outing Snugged First Half in :52, Opens Up to :48 for Last Half BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., . May 11. The track was still sloppy during the training, hours at Belmont Park this morning, though it was beginning to dry rapidly under the influence of a weak sun and strong wind. Alfred G. Vanderbilts Native Dancer worked the distance of Saturdays Metropolitan Mile in 1:40 and was only asked to run the last half of the trial. After a half in :52, the .work-watchers caught the third quarter in :23 and final quarter in :24, the last two furlongs in :12 and :12. Woodvale Farms Fancy Diver, who was unable to win in five starts during the winter and has been on the sidelines since March 1, also worked a mile in 1:40 this morning. The Brookfield four-year-old, who is eligible to the Suburban on May 31, could make his seasonal debut in a mile event on Friday, or in the six-f urlorig Knickerbocker Handicap on Saturday. Over on the deeper training track, which, because of its greater content of loam, was muddy this morning, W. M. Wickhams White Skies went a handy seven furlongs in 1:32. There is a fair chance that the eastern sprint champion will be seen in Saturdays Metropolitan, but trainer Tommy Root has indicated that the 5,000 Roseben Handicap at six furlongs the following week end is a more likely objective. White Skies, who has been assigned 126 pounds in the Metropolitan to 130 on Native Dancer, will presumably have to pick up more than 132 pounds in the Roseben possibly as much as 135.
