Clay Mouse Surprises In Featured Shawsheen Repels Reaping Cup, Ornum Bids; DeSpirito on Daily Double Victors SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 11. W. C. Pricketts lightly regarded Clay Mouse, piloted by the veteran Earl Gross, drove to a two and one-half length triumph in the featured Shawsheen Purse here today. Boldly taking the lead midway in the six-furlong dash, Clay Mouse withstood mild challenges from Ornum, who placed, and Reaping Cup, who finished third, to pay 1.60 for each wager. The sun broke through precipitous clouds this morning for the first time in almost a week of racing and the afternoon was a pleasant one for the 9,412 fans in attendance. Although drying fast, the track was heavy, with the winners time of 1:14 a full four seconds off the track standard. Clay Mouse, a three-year-old bay by Isolator House Mouse, whose last triumph came at the Fair Grounds exactly two month ago, assumed command after three furlongs. Ornum challenged at the far turn and continued strongly, although unable to overtake the leader. Reaping Cup moved into contention after two furlongs, but lost ground when forced to the outside. Admiral Chaney, the top selection in the wagering, tired after a brisk start and outlasted only Relics War, the second choice in the eight-horse field.
