Seventeen Fillies Vie in Betsy Ross Happy Mood Meets Jenjay and Trisong Threesome Are Recent Stake Winners; Unbeaten Fleurlea Also in Garden State Event By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 11. A bumper crop of 17 aspiring three-year-old fillies have answered the call to compete here tomorrow in the third running of the 0,000 added Betsy Ross stakes. Several stakes winners are in the large group, three of them recently gaining added money laurels, and they will compete under allowance conditions at six furlongs. The weights range from a high of 121, assigned to five of the members to a minimum of 111 pounds. The trio most recently successful in stakes competition are Lewis J. Tutts Jen-jay, the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland; Edwin Holtons Trisong, the Prioress Stakes at Jamaica; and John D. Hertz Happy Mood, the Acorn Stakes, at Jamaica. Others commanding respect are Ralph Lowes Fleurlea, unbeaten in, her only two starts; Maine Chance Farms Incidentally, one of last seasons leaders; East Acres Garstara, a galloping winner here last week; Joseph M. Roeblings Crisset, a stakes winner in New Jersey last year, White Oak Stables Sweet Cleo, and Foxcatcher Farms Dangerous Dame. There is just one stable coupling in the bulky band. King Ranchs On Your Own and Mrs. Edward Laskers Pen-in-Hand. Beat Queen Hopeful in Ashland Jenjay, a bay filly by Brookfield and Genevra M., may be the post favorite due to her Ashland triumph in which she gamely outf inished the vaunted queen of the Midwest, Queen Hopeful. The race appears wide open, however, and the publics fancy and the result are almost equally difficult to presage. Paul J. Bailey is due in from the Blue Grass country to pilot its champion. He rode her in the Ashland and several otner events, including her unsuccessful effort last time out in the Kentucky Oaks. Her chances are enhanced by possession of early speed, but that quality is generously sprinkled throughout the field. Trison, by Spy Song and Rare Venture, was a surprise winner when she captured the Prioress, in which Incidentally was making her most recent appearance and finished third. Trisong was beaten by Sotto Voce by a head in her last outing. Happy Mood dead-heated with Riverina in capturing the Acorn. The pair led the field by five lengths, and among the defeated were Sotto Voce and one of tomorrows rivals, Cain Hoy Stables Dangerous Dame. Sweet-Cleo had an impressive record in her early juvenile campaign, winning four Continued on Page Forty-Five Seventeen Sophomore Fillies Vie in Betsy Ross at Camden Continued from Page Three of seven starts in a campaign that wound up when she went amiss in the Rosedale Stakes in April. She finished third in her 1954 debut at Churchill Downs, tiring in the final stages. Incidentally was chosen as Mrs. Grahams representative in the Betsy Ross, filling in for the Kentucky Oaks victress, Fascinator. She is an able substitute and opinion has been divided as to which is the better of these two fillies since they launched their successful careers last spring. Sammy Boulmetis will ride Incidentally. Pete Anderson is coming in to ride Sweet Cleo, Hedley Woodhouse comes down from New York to handle Trisong, while no rider was named this morning for Happy Mood. Although untried in stakes competition, considerable support will be awarded Fluerlea. The Bull Lea Lue -Lily, by Blue Larkspur filly was genuinely impressive winning her only two races this spring in Maryland, and she has been training splendidly. She gets in with a minimum 111 pounds and will be ridden by Joe Valenti.
