Mrs. H. L. Nathenson?s Roman Stripe, a fleet gelded son of Roman and Fair Maid n., sped to a popular victory here this delightful spring afternoon in the Bardstown Purse before a mid-week crowd of over 10,000 spectators. Forwardly placed from the start of the six furlongs feature under a well-judged ride from jockey Kenneth Church, the Nathenson gelding reached the wire with a neck margin over Valley View Farms Mon Mar, pacemaker fo rthe greater part of the sprint distance. Two lengths away Brown Hotel Stables Numerical finished third while Baylor O. Hickmans homebred Senor Coati was along for fourth in the band of eight three-year-old Bardstown starters. Winner at Gulfstream Park Roman Stripe, a good winner in New York last year and successful in an overnight event at Gulfstream Park before shipment here, shouldered 120 pounds under the Bardstown Purse allowances and stepped the three-quarters mile over the -fast track in 1:11. Favored in the wagering at 13 to 5, the Nathenson gelding received a nice round of applause when Church galloped him back to the scales after the well-deserved accounting. Sonny Brown; racing for Creel Brown, Jr., and ridden by Johnny Adams, proved best of the seven speedy sprinters meeting in the three-quarters mile fifth event. Soriny Brown reached the lead after passing t the furlong marker in the stretch and lasted to beat Mrs. Herbert Herffs favored j New Stream by a nose. In the hotly-contested finish, George A. Cavanaughs Es-pedeco ran third and Melvin Carters Bull Skin, who led for the major portion of the t trip, garnered fourth money. Sonny Brown Beats New Stream Sonny Brown, stepped up ,500 on the 1 claiming scale, raced the six furlongs in 1:11 and he was a rank outsider in the 1 j tote at better than 18 to 1. Future Romance, a well-conformed home-! bred daughter of Futuramatic and Our Agnes, carried Emil Denemarks colors suc- 1 . cessfully in the Bridal Wreath Purse. The .Denemark filly, alertly guided by Johnny r : Heckmann, took command at the start of f the five-furlong dash and coasted to the : finish with a five-length advantage over her nearest rival, No Peeky. from the Mrs. 5 E.
