Maryland Notes PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 11. Stewart Sears, manager of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, reports that there are. 53 eligibles for the Back Again Purse scheduled for Wednesday, May 19. Only two-year-olds which were shown in the annual yearling show at Pimlico in 1953 are eligible. One of the extra features of the Preak-" ness this year will be the appearance of Miss Evelyn Ay, Miss America. She was on the Pimlico float welcoming the Orioles home this spring and she will participate in Preakness ceremonies on May 22. Missionary work oh the part of Maryland Jockey Club officials through the winter and early spring is apparently paying off at the local meeting. During the first three days, when 240 horses were in action, 70 were performers which had not raced in Maryland earlier this season. Jockey Nick Shuk is not riding today or tomorrow, having flown to Miami, Fla., to be with his ailing father. He expects to return to action Wednesday. Jimmy James again has taken over the book of jockey Bill Balzaretti, thus establishing a combination of long-standing. James also reports that Jimmy Combest will be here Saturday to handle Brandy-wine Stables Waila in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes.
