Whitfield Says Hell Run Mile in 3:56.5 This Year LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 11 UP. Veteran spikester Mai Whitfield, who holds the 1:48.6 world record for the 880-yard run, maintained today he will run the mile in 3:56.5 this year. , Whitfield told the Track and Field Writers Association yesterday he will shatter last weeks new world record mile of 3:59.4 turned in by Englands Roger Bannister. The two-time Olympic 800-meter"champ has run two competitive miles so far this year a 4:16.7 second place in the Penn Relays and. a 4:06.8 second place in the Atlantic Boardwalk Mile.
