Suffolk Cards Trial For Massachusetts Roedna, Wise Margin Carry Top Imposts of 1 17, Giving Two Pounds to Larry Ellis i By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent , SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 11. Five candidates for the 0,000 added Massachusetts Handicap are slated I to meet with two non-eligibles in a nine- furlong feature here tomorrow for a purse of ,500. The event was styled as a pre- : view of the New England regulars being : pointed for the richer event and will be , contested under allowance conditions. Red Head Stables Roedna, winner of a division of the Lincoln Special, and S. Tufanos Wise Margin, winner of the Gulfstream Park Handicap, are equally weighted at 117 . pounds in tomorrows feature. Grouped at 115 pounds are Futuresque, stablemate of Roedna, Morrie Sidells Smart Choice and Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Lingles Larry Ellis. River Divide Farms Quarter-Master and Mrs. V. Grillos Spy Ring, the two members of the line-up who are not eligible for the Massachusetts Handicap, get in the race with 111 and 110 pounds, respectively. While it is conceivable that the outcome of tomorrows trial will have bearing on the weight assignments to be determined by racing secretary Gordon Morrow for the Massachusetts Handicap, it is. not likely that either of the five candidates in the mid-week feature will be given the top impost for the big event to be held here on May 19. Tomorrows race looms as one of the most interesting carded in New England this season and that fact will be further emphasized when the public seek to install a favorite. Each of the contestants has shown enough this season to warrant a starting berth in the Trial and the Massachusetts Handicap. Won Two Races in New Orleans Prior to winning the Lincoln Special, Roedna picked up a pair of worthy triumphs at New Orleans since January 1 and to date has earned 6,675. Wise Margin attained his peak prior to winning the Gulf-stream Handicap but was deprived of a victory at the time. In the running of the McLennan Handicap at Hialeah Park the Market Wise colt was awarded second money behind D. J. Schneiders Elixir after finishing third. In that race, Wise Margin had to overcome repeated obstacles to finish as close as he did and would probably have been the winner with any kind of racing luck. In seven starts this season, the four-year-old Tufano star has won once, been second once and third on two occa- sions for a total earnings of 6,750. Larry Ellis, second to Royal Vale in the 1953 edition of the Masachusetts Handicap, steadily dropped out of the handicap picture in the waning months of last year. Freshened up during the past winter months, the former New England champ J was brought back and in each of his three outings this year has displayed improvement. In two local starts the son of Easy Mon War Cloth has been an impressive winner and has regained his legion of admirers. Futuresque must be considered the lesser of the Red Head Stable entry but off previous local performances cannot be eliminated. During the past winter the Questionnaire gelding won a handicap at New Orleans, beating Bugledrums and Money Broker, finishing third in four other outings against top caliber performers. Locally his record hasnt been impressive thus far this season. Spy Ring has moved into the handicap division from the claiming ranks after winning a pair of 0,000 selling events. For the years few similar cases have prevailed in New "England and this may be Spy Rings year. Last season the Cinderella horse was Andre. Smart Choice gained prominence here last Saturday when he annexed the 0,000 Commonwealth Handicap over the local grass course. Owner-trainer Sidell has always been of the opinion that his Sir Jim James colt is top caliber and he may well be on the way to proving the confidence of Sidell. Quarter-Master was claimed by his present owner from a winning race at Hialeah while carrying a price tag of ,000. Not forgetting the luck trainer Rollie Shepp had with Andre, this son of Economical must be considered a rank outsider in tomorrows event.
