Ten Preakness Candidates on Scene SAM E. WILSON, JR. The Texans Top Traffic and Pic and Play scored on yesterdays Churchill Downs program. Goyamo in Group At Pimlico Course Hasseyampa Is Coming From Churchill; Fisherman, High Gun Training at Belmont By CHARLES HATTON PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 13. The prospective field for the 79th Preakness a week from Saturday became somewhat more tangible today, with the arrival of Woodvales Goyamo from New York and a census showing 10 candidates now on the grounds. Goyamo finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby after being in close quarters a furlong out and he is to be ridden again by Eddie Arcaro, for whom he won the Blue Grass Stakes. In coming to Pimlico, the leggy son of Goya n. joins the Derby second, Hasty Road, the Wood winner, " Correlation, the Maryland favorite, Staffordshire, Admiral Porter, Homestake, For Free, Nirgal Lad, Ring King and Hang- over the same ground irr 1:45 but in a by several other prospects within the next 72 hours. Coming from Churchill Downs, where the meeting closes Saturday, is Walmacs supplementary eligible Hasseyampa, who was third and still running on resolutely at the close of the Derby. C. V. Whitneys PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 13. If 10 horses start in the Preakness, the stake will gross 39,150 and the net to the winner will be 0,600. There were 133 nominees at 0 each, for a total of ,650; three supplementary nominees at ,500, a total of 2,500; added money of 00,000, and an additional 0,000 if 10 horses compete starting fee of ,000 each. Record winners share in the Preakness was 8,005, earned by Calumet Farms Faultless, in 1947. Fisherman and King Ranchs High Gun have been training at Belmont as if they are intended starters. And it is learned that James Cox Brady and trainer Bobby Dotter will confer this week end concerning Artismos Preakness engagement. The Preakness Prep here Monday corresponds to the Derby Trial in its relation to the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans," and the result of this mile and a sixteenth may be the determining factor in Preakness plans for several of the lesser lights among the eligibles. Admiral Porter, Ring King, Staffordshire and Gigantic are eligibles who may appear in this dress rehearsal. Ring King was breezed a mile here this morning, dockers catching him in 1:49. Never asked for any real speed, he sauntered a quarter in :27, half in :53 and six furlongs in 1:21. Nirgal Lad went over the same ground in 1:45 but in a trifle less than consummate fashion. Riders have been engaged for a number of the probable Preakness field. Willie Shoemaker is to plane in for the assignment on Correlation, whose stretch-running technique suits his customary waiting race perfectly. P. J. Bailey is to ride Admiral Portejr, with Johnny Adams having the mount on Hasty Road, Nick Shuk on Staffordshire, Richard McLaughlin on Gigantic, Arnold Kirkland on Hasseyampa.. Though Californias Correlation was a beaten favorite in the Derby, he appears fond of the Pimlico going and to be training satisfactorily for Harold Simmons. Some observers believe he will be favored again in this second of the American "Triple Crown" events. The state of Pim-licos racing surface is unusually dull, particularly through the front stretch at the moment. This course always has had a reasonably deep cushion of sand and recent rains have left it damp beneath the topsoil.- Hasty Roads many admirers in particular will be interested to note how he handles this course. Up to now he has not reproduced his midwestern form in the East.
