: Queers Own Goes Fast Five Furlongs Clocked in :59!s in Best Queens Plate Trial Since Archworth Raced in 1939 By JACK AYERS Staff Correspondent WOODBINE PARK, Toronto, Ont., May 13. According to Tom Bird, Woodbines veteran clocker, the fastest trial ever recorded by a candidate fort h e Queens Plate since the late George C. McCullaghs Archworth skipped six furlongs in 1:12, was turned in on Thursday morning when the Queens Own worked five furlongs in :59Ms- Archworth turned in his performance in 1939 while training for a successful attempt in the "Gallop for the Guineas." Working from the starting gate in company with his stablemates My Word and Life Line, Queens Own streaked five furlongs in :59y5. His fractions were :23, 34 and :47. The golden-coated three-year-old son of War Jeep was handled by Jockey Bert Albert and he was under instructions from trainer Gordon "Pete" McCann to let the colt go right along at his best clip. Queens Own broke in advance of his work companions and if the workout had been in the nature of a contest, one would say that Queens Own just toyed with his opposition. In another drill at the same h-aining session, Free Trade, another Taylor eligible for the Woodbine classic, skipped a like five furlongs in :59, which but for Queens Own fast move, would be a record itself, for the five-panel trip. Free Trade had. Staff Reporter and My Wind as travelling mates and he finished well in advance of both. Free Trades fractional time was: 23y5, :34 and :47.. Training Conditions-Made fo Order This mornings training conditions were made to order for speed. Track superintendent Walter Richey had the strip lightning fast and the air was as still as the night. Before Queens Own sparkling exhibition this morning, he was regarded as second choice to the McMacken stables King Maple. Although E. P. Taylor has six eligibles for the Queens Plate, it is pretty well established now that he will rely on Queens Own and Free Trade in the blue ribbon event of the Canadian turf come Saturday, June 12. Both sophomores will make their seasonable debut in the six furlongs of the Plate Trial at Woodbine on Saturday, May 22. Queens Onw has never performed over a Canadian racing strip. The War Jeep colt wa$ seen under silks at Belmont Park, Jamaica and Garden State park last autumn, where he registered one victory and a pair of seconds in his only four starts as a juvenile.
