I ; ; ; j i Nine Travel Mile in Tailspin Purse Golden Gloves Has Alerted to Outrun Fair Brother Makes Seasonal Debut in Feature at Belmont; Cammel! LairdGoes inChase BELMONT PARK, ElmonC, L. I., N. Y., May 13. A field of nine, including a number of stakes horses, has been named for tomorrows featured Tailspin Purse, a ,000 event at one mile. This test is named for the Greentree colt who won the 1947 Peter Pan Handicap and finished third behind Phalanx and Tide Rips in the" Belmont Stakes of that year. Tailspin was the colt that trainer John Gaver decided that year must be taught to come from behind and. in furtherance of that plan, he had Eddie Arcaro ride him in a prep for the Peter Pan with instructions that he break him slowly, something Ted Atkinson had riot been able to accomplish. Arcaro restrained the colt so effectively that he didnt break at all, but it evidently accomplished the purpose as Atkinson was able to rate him in the stake the following week. Under the allowance conditions of the Tailspin, Hampton Stables Alerted, Saga Stables Flaunt, Bruce Campbells Ram. o War, Belair Studs Golden Gloves and Mrs. Jules Schwartz Fair Brother carry 120 pounds each. Mrs. Phil Biebers Bicarb, Mrs. Jan Burkes Swoop. and F. C. Rand, Jr.s Begorra carry 116 each, while Shaw-mut Stables Put Out is the lightweight of the field with 113 pounds. Difficult to Train Alerted is the class of the Tailspin field, but trainer Ray De Stefano has been un-r able to train the son of Bull Lea for almost a year, with the result that he is trying to gradually race him into condition. His most recent attempt was in the sprint won by Native Dancer last Friday, in which Alerted finished fifth, beaten slightly less than three lengths for all the money. That race should have been of sufficient benefit to enable Alerted to be a factor here. Eddie Arcaro will be in the saddle. Golden Gloves turned in the latest of a series of good races when finishing second to Straight Face in the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico last Saturday, with Ram o War finishing far up the track. "Mr. Fitz " charge may be favored. Jess Higley is slated to ride. Flaunt showed nothing in the Valley Forge Handicap at Garden State and appears to be an Aqueduct specialist, while Put Out comes from a creditable second to Armageddon here. Fair Brother improved vastly last August, but has not been seen since the autumn and may need a race. Bicarb finished far behind Golden Gloves in the Eight Thirty Handicap in which the Belair horse was narrowly beaten by Open Show here at Belmont. Swoop finished a, tiring fourth on the grass on Monday, while Begorra finished third to Count Flame and Dead Duck in a high-priced claimer at one mile on April 26. He was scratched because of a sloppy track" earlier this week. Two of the chasers who came over from Ireland for the International Steeplechase, Mrs. M. M. Griffins Louis Seize and Leslie Brands In View, are getting another chance in the War Battle Steeplechase at about two miles. The invaders will be opposed by Morris Dixons Palaja, who forced Extra Points pace for a mile and a half in the International, Mrs. Vernon G. Cardys Cammell Laird, who fell while running a winning race in his American debut, and Cherwell, Golden Furlong and Tourist List. The lightweight, Cammell Laird, who gets in with 130, should be very hard to beat. He was a sure jumper in France and went down in his local debut when he overjumped the 10th fence on a slippery track. GOLDEN GLOVES Carries Belair Stud colors in the Tailspin Purse at Belmont.
