On the Trot L By MORRIE KURLANSKY 1 Lew McPherson in Impressive Win Grand Wisconsin Off Stride at Start Fast-Class Trotters to Vie Tonight MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, 111., May 13. The Norman C. Towne Stock Farms homebred four-year-old pacing gelding, , Lew MacPherson, driven by Howard Beis-singer, who substituted in the sulky for trainer Dan Peacock, stomped to another impressive triumph in Tuesdays feature race here to justify the high regard in which this pacer is held by his. connections. Unfortunately, Grand Wisconsin, owned by u nomas a. Keating of Chicago, was off stride when starter Ralph Estes released the field of eight 24-class pacers for the Ottawa Pace and, while rapidly regaining most of the lost ground, Stan Stucker, his reinsman, was unable to bring the colt within striking distance of the leaders. Thus the much-, discussed question which of the two is the better could not be settled in a satisfactory manner. Grand Wisconsin, on the strength of two successive victories the past week, went to the post as an 8-to-5 favorite, with Lew MacPherson held at odds of 9 to 5, a wellrbacked second choice presumably because of his outside post position. Three-year-old Peter Vangundy, guided by Mel Harmening and starting from the rail, left the gate at a rapid clip, followed by Dusty Cecil with Bob Parkinson at the reins, while Lew Mac-V JPherson dropped into third position. It was not until well into the homestretch that Bcissinger pulled Lew MacPherson out behind the embattled Peter Van-gundy and Dusty Cecil and, while Harmenings pacer tired slightly from his pacemaking efforts, the Parkinson filly held valiantly on, but the Libertyville sidewheeler seemed to be flying the last fifty yards to win going away, albeit half a length, in 2:08, fastest time registered Tuesday Youthful Ed Casagranda, making his eighth start at this meeting, chalked up his fifth victory, scoring for the third time with the trotting mare, Dusty Lotus, who is now the only undefeated horse on the grounds.- Although being moved up in class after each of her two previous victories, Dusty Lotus had no difficulty in handling the seven B-class trotters opposing her, and also reduced her mark by over a second to 2: 10 Vs. As a matter of fact, Dusty Lotus not only is at present without a conqueror, she was never headed in all her three races here, getting the lead immediately every time and holding her advantage the full mile. This is even more amazing in that the closest she got to the rail in the starting lineup was No. 4. It should be interesting to see if Dusty Lotus, when next starting in BB class, is still onthe upgrade, for up to now there is no way of telling how good she really, is, while her reinsman has to be complimented on his outstanding job of rating the mare. Wilbur Long, a cheerful but unobtrusive man who does a very workman-like job in the sulky, for the second time this week guided a winner in one of the Daily Double races, annexing Tuesdays first race with the three-year-old filly, Lawful Lady, with superiority and later in the evening winning a CC-class pace with Minnie Do, an eight-year-old mare also owned by Lawful Ladys Master, Riley E. Stevens of Galesburg, HI., for a much appreciated double success. At the present time, Long has 18 horses in his care and his public stable is well-balanced with the fleet A-class pacer, BHaven, and the good trotters, Cliff Win and Deckwin, in addition to several promising three-year-olds of which Fitzs Mary Jo already is a double winner at this meeting. Good news again from the Wagner stable, who sent out the trotting mare, Louann Tell, for a score in the second race Tuesday . . . Highly-regarded Maestro Pick, a three-year-old Little Brown Jug aspirant acquired last fall by David Gulley of Har-risburg, 111., in his fifth start here entered the winners circle with a 2:1015 effort in a 24-class pace. The son of Gay Song, out of Malcolms three-quarter sister, Scotch Mary, was driven by Dee Stover . . . Gene Riegle hardly ever without a win on any racing night followed Mondays victory behind Ross Abbe, an odds-on favorite, with a long-shot victory behind the trotting mare, Ellie Blake, who made her seasonal debut on Tuesday. Magnolia Park, the new trotting track in Jefferson Parish, La., announces its first meeting of 45 nights will start on September 23. Located just seven miles from New Orleans, the plant has a -mile track and there are accommodations for 700 horses. A purse distribution totalling 00,000 for the meeting is sure to attract many of the better stables to this new track in the Southland . . . The surprise trotter of the Santa Anita meeting, Josedale Royal Lad 2:02, a five-year-old bay horse by Scotlands Comet 2:00, recently worked a mile in 1:59 at Stockton, Calif., according to a number of very reliable clockers. Fast-class trotters will contest Friday nights feature event, a two-dash affair at a mile, endowed with a ,800 purse. Shorty De Ponti, beaten favorite in last weeks .similar double header, will have another chance to redeem himself against Main liner, Buckie B., Cliff Win, Daisy Astra, Little Steve, Hal Tass and Johnny Brown . . . The fifth race on Fridays card, a mile heat for three-year-old pacers, received the entries of Assured, Dusty Cecil, The Black Goose, Victory Melody, L. L. Oliver, John Sitzmann and Minnie Jean. With this lineup, it will have a bearing on which sophomore sidewheeler will be declared best at this meeting.
