Privacy Holds Length Edge Over Paper Tiger Favorite Permian Finishes Third After Dwelling in Gate at Start By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 1. C. T. Chenerys Permian, the favorite in the featured Freetown Purse today, tried to spot his rivals a sixteenth of a mile at the start and didnt rejoin, the field until he reached the three-furlong pole. Ogden Phipps Privacy won the mile event by a length over Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Paper Tiger, while Permian closed fast through the stretch to be third, another length and a half in arrears. Fourth money went to William Zieglers First Watch, who finished a head behind the favorite. Privacy was second choice with the post-holiday crowd of 17,247, paying .20 after staggering home in a sluggish 1 :40. The son of Bossuet, who was ridden .by Jess Higley, was blowing as he came in the winners Continued on Page Forty-Four Privacy Is Length Victor at Belmont Leads Paper Tiger to Wire; Permian Runs Third After Dwelling in Gate at Start Continued from Page One circle and seemed slightly sore as he was led away. Ducat cut out the early pace in the Freetown, while Permian dwelt in the gate, something he has done to a lesser degree in other races. Peddie and Sam Brook forced Ducats pace in the run down the backstretch, followed by Privacy, who slipped into command along the inside rail near the far corner. At the same time, Paper Tiger began to move up rapidly on the extreme outside, while Permian was still a detached last. Curving for home, Privacy still led by about a length, while Paper Tiger moved into second place while going quite wide with First Watch in third place, after having been in close quarters at the three-furlong pole. Permian finally got into high gear, but much too late. Paper Tiger made a lunge in pursuit of Privacy coming to the furlong pole, but the Requested colt responded to Higleys urging and held his rival safe to the end, though both colts appeared nearly exhausted, despite a moderate early pace. Permian gained rapidly through the final eighth and headed First Watch right on the wire. Peddie, Ducat and Sam Brook, who finished in that order, all stopped after six furlongs. Miss Weesie Repeats T. F. Whites Miss Weesie ran right back to her last victory in the Semiramis Purse, secondary feature, stepping the six furlongs in 1:12 under mild urging from George Glassner. The Jeep filly reached the wire two lengths before R. S. Howards Mabs Choice, who closed with a belated rush on the extreme outside. J. S. Phipps Spinning Top, who had finished third behind Miss Weesie last week, occupied the same position at the finish today, a little more than two lengths back of the runner-up and a half length before C. V. Whitneys Carry the News, who saved ground at the final curve. A solid choice with the throng, Miss Weesie paid .10. Biddy Bid outran the favorite to the stretch here, then stopped badly.
