Tiercel Clean-Cut Delaware Winner Shows Way Home To Odds-On Ladd Light Impost of 101 Poundr Aids Miss A. Uhlars Colt At Deerhurst Purse Route By FRED GALIANI DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 1. Tiercel, carrying the colors of Miss Ann Uhlar, stopped Jouett Shouses Ladd, the odds-on choice, in his bid for a third straight victory. The winner captured the Deerhurst Purse, feature event of the afternoon, by a length and a quarter, as the choice, trying to come from far back, was unable to cut into the victors margin. Four lengths farther back in the field of eight was Victor Posners Swift Steve. Tiercel was lightly rigged at 101 pounds, including the apprentice allowance of Robert Stovall, and paid 4.40. His time for the mile and a sixteenth over the fast strip was 1:46. This was the second score in five starts this year for the son of The Phoenix Highway Code. The three-year-old won a sprint at Bowie for his initial appearance of 1954. The race itself was confined to three and four-year-olds who had never won a race at a mile or over other than claiming. Ladd Won Two Previous Races The majority of the crowd, which dropped to 8,866 placed complete confidence in Ladd, who had won his two previous outings, although both of them were sprint affairs. Ladd was allowed to lag in the rear of the field around the first turn and down the backstretch, while first Prince Regent and then Tiercel assumed the duties of the pacemaker. Tiercel gradually put Prince Regent away while Swift Steve and Nostrebor went after the leader. Ladd continued to make up ground slowly and, midway of the turn, was running fourth. He came on the inside of Nostrebor on the turn, then outside of Swift Steve for his bid. Down the stretch, Tiercel continued to lead and Ladd was unable to cut down his margin. Swift Steve was quickly displaced from second position, but was clear of Effortless for third money. The latter was many lengths out of it in the early running, but closed on the outside to make up ground.
