Lytles Correlation in the 78th edition of the famous Preakness Stakes on May 22. Hasty Roads courageous triumph over the favored California colt was worth 1,600 to Mr. and Mrs. Allie Reuben, master and mistress of Hasty House Farm. This years Preakness was the fourth richest to a winner in the history of the stake, being topped only by Faultless record 8,005 success in 1947, and Assault and Citation in 1946 and 1948, respectively. It is needless to say, perhaps, that Hasty Roads Preakness triumph gave him money-winning thoroughbred honors for the 18-day session at Old Hilltop, which opened on May 7 and ran through last Thursday: It also enabled his owners to top the money-earning owners list with 09,650. Hasty Road wound up with gleanings of 3,100 by virtue of a second to Correlation in the Preakness Trial, in addition to his Preakness victory. The Hasty House total was swelled by the success of their queenly Queen Hopeful in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for older fillies on May 15. In that lone Pimlico appearance of Queen Hopeful, she earned 6,550.. Straight Face Dixie Victor Runner-up laurels in the horse and owner tabulations went to Correlation and Lytle, respectively. Also highlighting the Pimlico spring term was the front-running triumph of Green-tree Stables four-year-old Straight Face in the Dixie Handicap, May 8. The gelded.son of Cnnnt. Flppt nnf. and19.5R0 inf.n t.hp Green- tree coffers that afternoon, giving the famous establishment of John Hay Whitney and his sister, Mrs. Charles Shipman Pay-son, fourth place among the money-winning owners, with Brookmeade Stable sandwiching their and the Lytle accumulations. Financially, the Pimlico meeting was a qualified success. The daily average attendance was down only about 6 per cent from the 21-day session conducted in 1953, while the daily pari-mutuel mean was off approximately 8 per cent from last year. In 1953, the daily crowds averaged 13,025 to 12,271 this spring; the wagering on a daily basis last year was ,010,209 to 28,767 in 1954. Overall, 220,871 patrons filed through the gates of the Baltimore course during the 18 days of sport and 6,717,804 went through the wickets. Eldon Eric Nelson, who nosed out Sammy Boulmetis for jockey honors at the Bowie meeting, which preceded Pimlicos get-together, continued nis winning ways at the latter plant. Nelson rode four more winners than his closest competitor, the veteran Nick Shuk, their respective totals being 20 and 16. While Shuk had the better percentage .21, he accepted only 77 mounts to Nelsons 112. R. Ruhyon averaged .27, but that was in only 22 attempts, in which he came home first on six occasions." Bernard P. Bond edged his brother, J. Bowes Bond, by one winner for trainer laurels. The former Bond saddled seven victors.
