Seven Sprinters Compete In Master Fiddle Purse Wolf Gal, Whiffenpoof, Bull Skin, Mickey W. in ThistleDown Event THISTLEDOWN, Warrensville, Ohio, June 1. The Master Fiddle Purse at six furlongs will headline the mid-week program here at ThistleDown. The race has been named in honor of last seasons winner of the ThistleDown Cup, who has now been retired. Another interesting event on the card will be first in the Northern Ohio distance series, which will be at a mile and one-sixteenth and he run as the last race on the program. The Master Fiddle has attracted a field of seven, which includes the Mike Lee-trained entry of Albemarle and Whiffen-poof. Slated to meet that tough duo are Mrs. Leo Wagners Nickey W., Samuel C. Dykes Yea Baraa, M. Carters Bull Skin, M. R Hamars Wolf Gal and Mrs. L. Frys Best Air. Wolf Gal, a bay daughter of Samurai, was one of the leading two-year-olds at Hialeah during the season of 1953 and since then has .been racing well. One of her better races this year was scored over the Gulfstream Park track, when at five and one-half furlongs she bested Blenfly by five lengths in the slop. Her time was an excellent 1:05. Wolf Gal is one of the more capable sprinters on the grounds and may go postward as a lukewarm favorite. The Lee-trained entry of Whiffenpoof and Albemarle figures to run a good race, with most of the support going to Whiffenpoof, Both horses arrived here early in the week from Wheeling Downs, where they had been raced during that tracks spring meeting. Whiffenpoof is a former stakes winner and. won his only start at the Wheeling meeting. Nickey W who won the Shaker Handicap last year at Randall Park, will like the off condition of the strip. Heavy rains Tuesday morning turned the track, into a sea of mud, and the. best the strip can be for Wednesday is slow. This son of Jimmy Mbran shares the six-furlong track record "across the street." Best Air has been racing in Maryland this spring and has turned in several good races and has been training well for this race. Yea Bama represents one of the stronger stables on the grounds and certainly cannot be counted but of this event. Bull Skin also can be tough on occasion.
