How Speed Ratings Are Compiled Speed ratings appearing in DAILY RACING FORM past performances are based on a comparison of each horses running time with the track record. The track record will receive a standard rating of 100 thus, a horse equaling the record will have a speed rating of 100. For each one-fifth second slower than the track record, one point is deducted. Therefore, the rating for a horse running his race two and one-fifth seconds slower than the track record receives a speed rating of 89 100 minus 11. EXAMPLE Track record 1:10 Winners time l:10Vs Time of second horse 1:10? Time of third horse 1:11 Time of "f ourth horse 1:11.75 Time of fifth horse 1:11 Rating figure 100 Rating 99 97 95 93 91 N One point the equivalent of one-fifth second is deducted from the rating for each length the horse is beaten. Thus, a horse beaten four lengths in a six-furlong race run in 1:11 rating of 100 where the track record is 1:10 is timed in 1:11, receiving a speed rating of 91. Where a horse breaks the track record, his speed rating will exceed the standard rating of 100 by one point for each one-fifth second faster than the track record. Thus, if the record is 1:10 and a horse is timed in l:09?5, his speed rating will be 102.
