Course By RONALD KRANCEK Staff Correspondent THISTLEDOWN, Warrensville, Ohio, June 2. The largest Daily Double in the history of the new ThistleDown, ,275, was made possible this afternoon when J. G. Lockwoods Gareth accounted for the second race and paid 23.80. There were six tickets sold on the winning 3-12 combination. Gareth was ridden by Ralph "Buddy" Root and completed the six furlongs in 1:15. Gareth had made one previous start, finishing last at Garden State in a 12-horse field. In his race this afternoon the colt broke in first position and then was displaced by Millies Babe on the run up the backstretch. The ultimate winner moved from the outside once again to wrest command on the final bend and, while being strongly handled, disposed of Chilly Chicks challenge. The latter loomed the most dangerous entering the stretch and then hung, finishing a length and a quarter back at the wire. Wilmer C. Ensors Miss Zenith was third another five lengths back. Smith and Steeles Minuet accounted for the first race, getting to the wire two lengths in front of the favored Bubble-stream. Zybie was third another three lengths removed at the end of the six furlongs. Minuet was making her initial start of the season and rewarded her backers with 5.00. Her six furlongs was completed in 1:15. The featured Master Fiddle Purse, named for last years winner of the ThistleDov ri Cup, had to take a back seat here this afternoon after the record breaking Daily Double return. The Master Fiddle was captured by M. Carters Bu1! Skin, one of the outsiders, in the seven-horse affair. Apprentice Al Whiting rode the colt to victory and as a team they completed the six furlongs in 1:14, over the slow track. Bull Skin paid 7.80. The favored Wolf Gal, winner of last years Juvenile Stakes at Hialeah, was second, two and one-half lengths in arrears and another three parts of a length clear Continued on Page Forty-Four Minuet, Gareth in Record ThistleDown Daily Double Continued from Page One of Mrs. Leo Wagners Nickey W. Samuel C. Dykes Yea Bama was fourth another five lengths farther back. A slim crowd of about 3,800 turned out on a miserable, cold afternoon to witness the eight-race program. Through the feature only one favorite had come through on top. Whiffenpoof, running as part of the Mike Lee-trained entry, along with Albemarle was first to show in front of the Master Fiddle. Nickey W-, was second with Bull Skin, showing third. Wolf Gal, Best Air, Yea Bama, and Albemarle completed the field. The ultimate winner moved to the fore soon after the start and after the first quarter of a mile was in fourth by a length, with Yea Bama second and Wolf Gal another length and one-half back. Whiffenpoof was fourth while on the outside of horses. Bull Skin saved ground on the turns, and racing into the stretch was in front by three lengths. Wolf Gal had now moved into second position and Nickey W. was a closer third. Yea Bama had dropped to fourth and Whiffenpoof was fifth. Through the final furlong Wolf Gal could not seriously menace the winner and could make up only a half length. Nickey W. insured show money from the tiring Yea Bama.
