: : : : : Second Win for American-Owned and -Bred Horse The victory of Robert S. Clarks Never Say Die in the Epsom Derby Wednesday marked the second time in the 174-year history of the race that an American-bred and -owned horse won the classic. Iroquois, in 1881, was the first to triumph. In all, five American owners have been victorious in the Derby, W. C. Whitney with the English-bred Volodyvski in 1901, Richard Croker with the Irish-bred Orby in 1907, and W. C. Duryea with the French-bred Durbar II in 1914.
