LaMotta, Ex-Middleweight Champion, Retires From Ring MIAMI BEACH, Fla., June 2 UP. Jake LaMotta, former world middleweight champion, announced today he will retire from boxing because he "just isnt up to it anymore." LaMotta was scheduled to meet Ernie Durando in a nationally televised fight here next Wednesday night. But co-promoter Chris Dundee said LaMotta informed him of his decision following his regular road-work today. "LaMotta said hefelt tired and just was not-up to it anymore," said Dundee. "Jake said he thought it out very carefully before he decided to hang up his gloves and no one influenced his decision." In the last fight of his attempted comeback, LaMotta lost a 10-round decision to Billy Kilgore, Miami middleweight. Dundee said Kilgore, who lost his last fight with Hans Stretz of Milwaukee, has been mentioned as a possible substitue for La--Motta against Durando.
