King Maple Accounts For Queens Plate Trial No. 2 Scores Hollow Victory in First Half of Split Woodbine Feature By JACK AYERS Staff Correspondent WOODBINE PARK, Toronto, Ont., June 21. The McMacken Stables King Maple Daily Racing Forms 1953 Horse of the Year, again performed to expectations here this afternoon when he scored a hollow victory in the mile and 70 yards of the first division of Plate Trial No. 2. Handled by his usual pilot and backed to the exclusion of all others, the country looking son of Fairaris and Noon Maid came to the finish showing five lengths in advance of the Bur-Fit Stables Pancho who enjoyed a neck margin over E. P. Taylors Staff Reporter. Nine Canuck-bred sophomores ac-balanced unit is Mrs. Gladys H. Fishbacks cepted the issue. Alertly handled at the post and showing more early speed, than usual, King Maple moved into third position to Trochanter and Pancho midway of the back lane. On leaving that straightaway Lindberg let out a loop and that was it. King Maple turned into the home lane showing four lengths in front added another length to that margin at the end. It was clearly evident that at the wind up. Both Pancho and Staff Reporter gave of their best but neither was a match for the McMacken colt. King Maple was held a l-to-10 risk with a crowd of about 9,000 fans and he covered a fast but dead, racing strip in 1:44. Mrs. McMacken was presented with, the trophy by Col. R. S. McLaughlin, a director of the Ontario Jockey Club. J. E. F. Seagram, another director, did the same chore in the second division of the Plate Trial. E. P. Taylors Queens Own, handsome three-year-old son of War Jeep and Sea Reigh, took down, honors in his division of Plate Trial No. 2. in impressive fashion. Handled by jockey Bert Albert, the Tay-lorite completed his mile and 70 yards in 1:43 to reach the close two and three-quarter lengths before the Bur-Fit Stables Collisteo, the sophomore who figured to give him the most trouble. Third honors fell to Dr. L. H. Applebys Western Canadian-bred Hi Laude who was nine lengths in the wake of the runner-up. In hand early, Queens Own moved to the leading Collisteo nearing the three-furlong pole After dueling around the turn and. into the home lane, Queens Own moved away from the Bur-Fit colorbearer when shaken up and after drawing into a safe lead, was not urged at all by Albert in the final yards. Queens Owns time was four-fifths of a second faster than that of King Maple but there was little early pace in the division taken by King Maple. Queens Own paid .40. King Maple and Queens Own will now mark time until Saturday, June 12, when they will match strides in the 95th running of the Queens Plate. At this time, it looks strictly a two-horse race.
