Quantity, not quality, was stressed here this afternoon when nine races were decided, but the feature was a ,200 event for three-year-olds named the Kankakee. It was at six furlongs and was taken by Numerical, a son of Eight Thirty, from the stable of J. Graham Brown, Louisville hotel man. Paris Fleet finished second and Pielettaway was third, with the heavily backed Mon Mar ending up in sixth place in the seven-horse field. Numerical was ridden by Al Popara and paid .80. Dicks Future set the early pace with Pielettaway closest, and the latter took over on the stretch turn to open up a length lead. Meanwhile, Numerical had been improving his position and he easily forged to the front after entering the home lane to win by six lengths. Leading Rider at Sportsmans The track was deep in mud for the running of the Wednesday program as the winners time of 1:19 for the feature would indicate. A crowd of 7,364 turned out in cool threatening weather. Ronnie Baldwin, who was the leading jockey at Sportsmans Park, rode three of the first five winners. His triumphs came aboard Riot in the second race, Whirl Awhile in the fourth, and Gallant D. in the fifth, But one of his mounts, Riot, was favored: He made it four for the day with Ment Pot in the nightcap. Riot completed the smallest Daily Double of the meeting, 5.60. The successful racer in the first part of the combination was Bidandmade, a six-year-old mare who was a well backed public choice. She led a band of nine all the way at the six-furlong distance in the opener and was piloted by apprentice Tommy ONeil. The third consecutive favorite scored when Pryness, first racer to bear the Fred Hooper colors at this session, was a two-length winner. Jockey Don Scurlbck, accepting his first mount of the meeting, was on the winner and appeared to know what he was doing at all times. He sent Pryness forward in the stretch tP nip the pace-making Destino Miss in the five-furlong two-year-old affair. Red Speed in the fourth was the first well liked one to lose. He was in second place to the stretch turn and then faded out of the money. Baldwin had Whirl Awhile on the rail -early and brought him to the outside of the pacemaking Re-Shuffle on the stretch turn to register by three lengths. Strongplay was second and Re-Shuffle third. Gallant D. won his fourth purse in seven starts this year in taking the fifth. Culler-ton was an odds-on choice, but the manner in which the race was run proved clearly that it was a poor selection. Gallant D. led air the way and after going a quarter was never less than three lengths in front. He won by five. Busy Now, who was second, finished 10 lengths in advance of Cullerton, who was third. The distance was one and one-sixteenth miles and six raced. Deep Wonder and Vici Admiral, battling it out through the stretch in the sixth race, furnished the most thrilling finish of the afternoon. Deep Wonder, ridden by Paul Bailey, got the nod after the pair had raced head and head through the stretch. Babys Pal, the favorite, was third in the six-furlong dash.
