R E F L E C T I O N S By NELSON DUNSTAN BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 2. Only three stakes remain on the Belmont Park schedule and the Peter Pan is the first, slated for this week end. Correlation is now in New York and is eligible for this race, although he is a doubtful starter. The Lytle racer is pointing for the Belmont on June 12, and in all proba bility will be on parade for that third leg of the "Triple Crown." The more one reviews the career of this California-bred son of Free America, the more he must come to the conclusion that this horse is not an in-and-outer, but one who has been troubled by some sort of infirmity that prevents him being at his best on certain occasions. When a horse bears in as he does, one cannot help but wonder why he can be so brilliant on some occasions and run a dull race on others. He was beaten in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Jersey Stakes. He has been hard-raced and is in need of a rest, for he is no different from any other horse, or for that matter any human. He - will have Porterhouse to contend with in the Belmont and, unless he is at his best, he will have little chance of defeating the Llangollen colorbearer who has been brought along so carefully and who has been pointed specifically for this classic, skipping rich races in the interim. AAA One, of the remarkable phases of the current season is the success of Hasty House Farms. . After Hasseyampa was defeated in the Preakness, Howard "Babe" Wells registered a complaint with our own Jim Murphy. He asked the officials, the press and others how they can say where his colt would have finished had he not been Correlation Puzzle of Sophomore Ranks Colt Slated to Start in Belmont Stakes Hasty House Has Little Luck in New York Imported HorsesW inning in This Country impeded by Hasty Road and Correlation. It was a sensible question. Arnold Kirkland, on Hasseyampa, would have been justified in going to the stewards and making a charge against both horses. He did not do so, but it should have been obvious to the stewards that these two horses did interfere with Hasseyampa. The latter went out to Lincoln Fields and on Monday was defeated by Sea O Erin, a stablemate of Hasty Road, Sea O Erin reminds us of the old Calumet practice. If they didnt throw Citation against you, they -could call on Coaltown. We believe that the question of Hasseyampa in the Preakness has been settled, to our satisfaction at least. Hasseyampa is a real good colt, but whether he is one of the tops must await later evidence. He is not eligible for any of the immediate races in the New York area. AAA With all their success in other parts of the country, Hasty House Farm has had very little luck in the New York sector. And luck plays its part in racing, as well as breeding. Mr. and Mrs. Allie Reuben," and we commented upon it in this column recently, seems to have a faculty for selecting good yearlings, and that is a trick in itself. After winning the Preakness with Hasty Road, they came to New York with Queen Hopeful, who was, naturally, the favorite with the metropolitan gathering at Belmont Park. But the best the filly could do was run fourth to Cherokee Rose in the Coaching Club American Oaks, one of themost valued events for three-year-old fillies in this land. They wanted to win this race, but their filly, a small daughter of Roman, was just not good enough. Still, they have no complaints, for their successes in different parts of the country has been spectacular. At Saratoga last August, Reuben told this writer how they selected their racing material, and it made a lot of sense. Before buying, they analyze all angles, and it is something of a, compliment to a breeder when this couple start bidding for a young racing prospect. A .A A The three-year-old division should have further clarification on the week end, for the Peter Pan in New York and the Kent at Delaware give promise of attracting some of the best sophomores of the season. There is a question whether War of Roses, who defeated Correlation and others in the Jersey Stakes, will start here in New York or at the Delaware course. He has been assigned 118 pounds for the Peter Pan. This is one of the years when the three-year-old championship will remain in doubt until late in the season, though the Kentucky Derby, Withers and Preakness, along with the Jersey Stakes, have already been decided. War of Roses is a son of Tudor Minstrel, and is another example of how foreign-bred horses are making their way in American racing. While some people object to the Aga Khan and others bringing foreign-breds to this country, we cannot alter the fact that they have made good over here for many years and are continuing to do so. At Delaware on Monday, a colt by Nasrullah, named Limelight, was a winner, and if one checks the Nasrullahs he will see that they are doing mighty well. They do breed good looking horses and also winners on the other side.
