Several Records Set at Garden State DEVERNE EMERY Leading Garden State trainer with nine saddling suc-- cesses. Average Daily Play Over ,000,000 Memorial Day Crowd of 44,569 and ,336,093 Handle All-Time Highs If ever flags flew favorably and famously at a race meeting, they waved widely in the month-long May session at Garden State Park. The 25-day term at the Camden, N. J., course, concluded Memorial Day, established five new attendance and wagering records, namely: 1 The Memorial Day throng of 44,569 represented the largest in the tracks 13-year history as well as the largest at any track i the state. . 2 The pari-mutuel handle of ,336,093 on that holiday reached a new high for a single day. 3No less than 566,479 filed" through the turnstiles during the 25 daily programs. 4 Wagering for the meeting hit 0,-585,322. 5 The Memorial Day Daily Double handle of 44,344 eclipsed the mark set in 1943. As if that isnt enough for the sagacious Garden State officials and directors to sit back and relate for months and possibly years to come, they also can point with pride to the daily average wagering bf ,023,413, first time in Garden States history that the figure has exceeded two million, and the first time that any New Jersey track has hit that mark, for that matter. Last years daily mean wagering at tne spring, session was . In cold figures, Garden States handle and attendance were up almost 4 per cent each as compared with the corresponding 1953 meet. Last year, the daily average crowds were 21,751 as against 22,659 this season. Purely from a racing standpoint, the highlight of the meeting was the 30th edition of the ,0,000-added Jersey Stakes last Saturday. Mrs. J. R. H. Thourons War of Roses culminated a succession of stakes by taking that number in convincing fashion from Red Hannigan, High Gun, Correlation and eight others. War of Roses victory was worth 6,800 and not only gave him thoroughbred money -winning honors for the meeting, but his mistress, as well. Lillal Colonial Winner On the Memorial Day celebration Monday, W. L. Jones, Jr.s four-year-old Alorter filly, Lillal, mildly surprised by capturing the thirtenth running of the 0,000-added Colonial Handicap, 11th and final stakes of the meeting. In the beaten field were Emardee, Speedy Wave, Stepper Upper, Outsmart, On Your Own, Canadi-ana, Atalanta, Dixie Flyer, Sunshine Nell, Senga, Singing Beauty, Brazen Brat, Bye and Bye and Petal, respectively. Other winners of stakes and handicaps run during the Garden State session, with the names of the races in parentheses, were: Pet Bully Valley Forge Handicap , Right Down William Penn Stakes, Just Sidney Camden Handicap , On Your Own Betsy Ross Stakes, I Geegee Delaware Valley Stakes first division, Briquet Delaware, Valley Stakes second division Royal Note Cherry Hill Stakes. Capeador Thomas J. Healey Handicap and Menolene Rancocas Stakes. Sammy Boulmetis, always a tartar in New Jersey, topped the riders with 36 winners in 148 mounts. But Sammy barely beat out the sensationally-riding Willie Hartack, who finished with 34 victors in 153 attempts. Boulmetis, while accepting five fewer mounts than Hartack, had the best percentage .24 to the latters .22. Dave Emery "nosed out" Sidney Jacobs for training laurels, nine winners to eight.
