Satisfied, with Church in the irons, had enough left at the end to withstand the closing challenge of Vezlark. Darting Brook had no trouble accounting for her second straight success. She was pitted against eight runners in the seven-furlong third and won as she pleased under the handling of apprentice Tommy ONeil. The filly was the favorite. Colonel Fru, a three-year-old, lasted to trim the four-year-old Pick and Play in the fourth. King, the favorite, set the pace to the head of the stretch, where Colonel Fru, ridden by Steve Brooks, moved to the front end. Pick and Play came from behind and was beaten only a half length. King stopped badly in the stretch and finished last in the eight-horse field. The distance was one mile.
