tries, tries, but but there there car can On the Trot Br MORRIE KURLANSKY Maywood Park Meet in Final Week Eight Go in Mondays Open Pace Countess Vivian 1 :59 in Field MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, HI., June 12. One of the outstanding pacing events will take place on Monday night here when the current meeting enters the last week of a scheduled 57-night stand, five of which unfortunately had to be canceled because of bad weather conditions. Mondays Open Pace, a one-dash affair for a ,000 purse, was carded after the originally p 1 a n n ed early-closing event received only four en-l be be no no doubt doubt that that this this tries, tries, but but there there car can be be no no doubt doubt that that this this "substitute" race will be even better than the one that had to be discarded. Eight of the fleetest sidewheelers on the grounds will contest in this mile heat, and after the drawing for post positions the following field emerged: Peggy Barnes Jack Beas-ley ! No. "1; Battle Prince "Dee Stover No. 2; Doctor Topmiller Roy Adams No. 3; Thomas Hat Harry Burright No. 4; Red McKlyo Howard Beissinger No. 5; Countess Vivian Mel Harmening No. 6; Billy Wasson Jim Kealey No. 7; and Athlone Ruler Harold Wilson No. 8. With the exception of Thomas Hat, who makes his seasonal bow in this race, all starters have won at this meeting and between them they have compiled a total of 17 victories at Maywood Park. Two of the starters are members of the coveted two-mihute list, namely the world champion pacing filly, Countess Vivian 3, 1:59, and the black stallion Battle Prince 4, 2:00. The lifetime earnings of the eight starters amount to over 00,-000, a fact that bespeaks best the class of this field. Countess Vivian, the outstanding daughter of a great race horse, Kings Counsel 1:58, comes off two excellent races on June 4, when she defeated the fast Saunders Mills colt, Knox Hanover, in the first heat of an early-closing event and conceded the second dash by a mere nose to the Ohio invader, who established a new mark for the meeting by pacing the mile in 2:04. Her-most formidable opponent looms in Billy Wasson, the winnihgest horse in Chicago this spring with six victories out of eight races. The Congressional gelding enjoys great popularity here for his admirable consistency for besides his six wins he was third twice to be the show players dream. It is the first time that these two horses meet each other in a race here and this long awaited clash may well result in a reduction of Good Times track record of 2:03y3. Provided, of course, that weather and track conditions are favorable, there is a strong possibility that the winner of this free-for-all event will crack the midget pacers long standing mark with the presence of such swift beginners like Peggy Barnes, Doctor Topmiller and Red McKlyo in the line-up. The free-legged Peggy Barnes acquired a new record of 2:05 only las Thursday night and this Indiana-owned mare was never better than this spring. Doctor Topmiller, a five-year-old gelding, who did not make his race track debut until last summer, last week made all the pace in a B Class event to get nipped at the wire by Judy Cash, who was timed in 2:05. The Colossal son is steadily improving and has a better than outside chance even in this field. The other starters, Battle Prince, Thomas Hat and Athlone Ruler, won most of their races in come-from-behind fashion, and this trio can be depended on "to really pour it on in the last quarter, and a victory by any of this trio would hardly be a surprise. Harry Burright, that talented man in the sulky, moved up to second place in the driver standings and will give the leader, Howard Beissinger, quite a tussle for the meeting championship this last week. On Thursday night Harry was in the winners circle twice. First, he annexed a Class C trot with George A. Brauns mare, Eva Braun,-to give the Spud Hanover daughter a new record of 2:08. His second victory came behind the Marengo-owned filly, Bonnie Prince, in a mile race for three-year-old pacers, and here, too, Harry was credited with having given his charge a new mark of 2:10. Another trainer, who enjoys one of his best seasons, also guided two winners on Thursday. He is Jake Mahoney, who also bettered his place among the first .10 reinsmen and, is now in fourth position with 15 victories. His winning mounts were Marie Brookwood and Buddy Brookwood, both pacers sired by Brookdale but not out of the same dam, while the pair is owned by Dr. H. T. Wills, of Chicago. Both Marie and Buddy reduced their speed marks to 2:10 and 2:09, respectively. In the series of Northern Illinois colt events, the two-year-old trotters were in the limelight for the first time this season. Gary H., whose sire, Spencer Camp, currently is racing with success on the lateral gait here, won the mile dash in 2:234, showing good manners and nice trotting action, if slow as yet. Delgin, a brown filly owned and driven by Jerry Baier, finished last in this race, a fact that wouldnt be noteworthy if she were not one of the first foals sired by Lusty Volo, Hamble-tonian winner in 1950 for Hayes Fair Acres Stables, DeQuoin, 111. Dorsie Spittlers f ree - legged flyer, Peggy Barnes, won her first race of the season on Thursday night in a very creditable 2:05 after fractions of :30, 1:01 and 1:33 had been cut out by the speed-crazy Mary Jane Clark, a pacer that could be a world beater if she were amenable to rating. When Ray Holt-mans Miss Behaven won a C Class pace in 2:09 on Thursday, veteran racegoers and horsemen were elated by the fact that the man in the sulky behind the chestnut mare "Buck" Lamb, apparently hasnt lost his magic touch. It is a long time ago that Buck was in the winners circle, the gifted reinsman in the last few seasons often being short of mounts.
