Expect Expect Nine Nine to to Meet Meet in in 81st 81st Derby; Derby; High High Voltage Voltage Annexes Annexes Acorn Acorn Stakes Stakes Has Almost Length On Sometime Thing Arcaro Drives Wheatleys 1954 Juvenile Filly Champ Hard for Popular Success By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 4. — Surging up on the outside near the finish after being in close quarters most of the way, Wheatley Stables 1954 juvenile filly champion, High Voltage scored a popular victory in the 25th running of the 1,950 Acorn Stakes. With Eddie Arcaro driving his hardest, the gray- daughter of Ambiorix reached the end of the mile almost a length before Alfred G. Vanderbilts Sometime Thing, who led Louis Lee Hag-gin, n.s Hen Party almost two lengths. Alberta Ranches In Reserve was only a head out of the money at the end of a hotly contested mile in 1:38%. Strongly favored by the majority in the sunny-day crowd of 23,608, High Voltage paid .40. High Voltage was wearing blinkers for the first time and they evidently helped her, particularly when she was forced to race in close quarters much of the journey. Consecutive Double for Arcaro The victory was the second in a row for Arcaro, who won the fifth event on Cyclotron, and they were the first since he returned to action following 10-day suspensions incurred at Jamaica on April 8 and at . Bowie April 10, which grounded him for 20 calendar days. Johnny Longdeh paid his first visit to New York in some years to ride in this race and it was not entirely fruitless as he was astride In Reserve. High Voltages victory netted 2,900 to Mrs. H. C. Phipps, her owner-breeder and brought the fillys earnings to 91,005. Minnie Moocher broke in front from the extreme outside at the start of the Acorn, but was quickly joined by Fanford, racing on the rail. At the end of a quarter Sorceress, In Reserve and Sometime Thing were in a close group right behind the two leaders and as they went to the far turn High Voltage was a length behind and with a screen of horses in front of her. At the Continued on Page Forty-Eight High Voltage Best In Bel monte Acorn Arcaro Drives Wheatleys Fine Filly Home Nearly Clear of Sometime Thing Continued from Page On« same moment, Java Belle ranged up on the outside and appeared about to hem High Voltage in a pocket. That filly soon fell away, however, and Arcaro was able to steer the favorite to the outside without, losing too much ground. This was not true: of Courtesy, who was all over the race track in search of racing room. Fanford tired above the head of the stretch and Sometime Thing ranged up outside of her, while Hen Party sped around Fanford and ducked for the rail J while High Voltage was in fourth place on the outside and moving freely and strongly. It was Minnie Moochers turn to tire as they straightened away for the run home, leaving Sometime Thing with a daylight lead, but that filly tried to look up the Widener course, according to jockey Eric Guerin, and ducked in badly. That might have cost her the race, as High Voltage kept on coming on a straight line and took command at the sixteenth pole. Though K appearing to tire in the final yards, Highi Voltage was going away at the end. Hen Party held on fairly well to stave off the closing bid of In Reserve. Courtesy; finished fifth after a rough trip, closely followed by Villa and Java Belle, who had made a second bid in the upper stretch that carried her into fourth place for a few strides. Of the others, Sorceress was badly buffeted about at the far turn and dropped out of it to finish next to last in the field of 14, all of whom carried equal top weight of 121 pounds. Fanford finished last, completely exhausted by her early exertions. Arcaro was scoring his fourth victory in the Acorn, will be going after his sixth Kentucky Derby on Saturday on Nashua, , who, like High Voltage, will be saddled by the veteran Jim Fitzsimmons. Migrator Wins at First Asking Greentree Stable unveiled a potential ju-1 venile star in the fourth race in the handsome form of Migrator, a dark bay son of Devil Diver, from First Rose, by Menow, who resembles his maternal grandsire more than he does his daddy, which is perhaps, just as well. With Ted Atkinson giving him a brisk hand ride, Migrator led throughout the four and a half furlongs and coasted to the finish four lengths before Hal Price Headleys Pester. Brandywine Stables Countermand, a "fielder," was a neck* farther back and a length and a half be-. fore Danny Arnsteins Eiffel Blue. Backed 1 into favoritism, Migrator paid .80 and was teletimed in :51%. The winner is eligible to be tested for class in next Wednesdays Juvenile Stakes here. Gibbys Gays Piquanette and William H. Miles Canaris combined for a 60.50 Daily Double. Bill Boland hustled Piquanette home a neck before Khan in the opener. With Heed Me a length farther back, after being slow to leave the gate. Velvet was only a head out of the money, tiring along the rail after leading into the stretch. Tea-neck Flash was the "good thing" here, but lacked speed and raced very wide. Piquanette paid 0.80 straight and was clocked in 1:21%. Canaris was claimed a week ago by the same H. A. Jerkens who haltered Broken Wing and moved him up from ,500 to 1,500 in 11 days. Canaris moved up ,000 today, but dropped nine pounds from his last three races, in which he had been trying to carry a crushing 124. The roan gelding took an early lead and Bennie Serido never stopped punching on him, though he won by six lengths over Ham Bone, the favorite, who led Cosmos another four and a half lengths. Canaris was clocked in 1:12 and paid 1. Eddie Arcaro rode his first winner since his 20-day suspension, when he steered Clifford Mooers Cyclotron to a six-length score over Calumet Farms Dixie Lad in the fifth race. This seven-furlong test was named the "Millinery Purse" in honor of a fashion show held in,, connection with the Acorn Stakes. Cyclotron was favored and never left the issue in doubt, leading throughout the extended dash to score as he pleased in 1:24 ys. He paid .50.
