Policeman Day Is Starter at Laurel Meets Wagon Drill, Night Bell, Blazing Count and Indicative at 1 1-16 Miles By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent LAUREL, Md., May 4.— Walter M. Jef- fords Policeman Day, whose disappointing effort in the recent Chesapeake Stakes was not a true indication of his capabilities, will be given an opportunity to make amends Thursday afternoon in the featured Maryland Medical Purse, a mile and , one-sixteenth event designed for three-year-olds. Foremost of the opposition are Mrs. Sam Lewins Wagon Drill, Eugene Constantin, Jrs Indicative, Trio Stables Royal Morse, Barclay Stables Blazing Count and Mrs. T. A. Randolphs Night Bell. Others in the overnight fieid are Ella K. Brysons Abbe Dryad and E. S. Voss, Jrs. Drop Kick. Policeman Day, a green-running son of Challedon and .Blue Denim, has impressed as a real classy sophomore in his training but has displayed little in competition to suggest that he is a colt of stakes caliber. Prior to the Chesapeake he trained a mile in 1:39% and went out nine furlongs in 1:53%. Following his disappointing stake effort, he came back on another occasion with a mile in 1:39% on a morning during which stake horses couldnt get close to 1:40. He will be ridden again tomorrow by Tony DeSpirito, who has been riding in excellent form for the Jeffords Stable. Wagon Drill 1,000 Claim Wagon Drill was a claim for 1,000 during the Hialeah meeting, has proved well worth that price while sprinting for her present owner. This will be her initial attempt at a mile and a sixteenth but there are many who suspect that she possesses such capabilities. The same can be said of Royal Morse, who won during the Bowie meeting, then was unplaced in the mud in a New York engagement. Blazing Count, a 8,000 yearling ac-quistion by John McShains Barclay Stable, beat non-winners of two races here recently for his second success. He came from off the pace in that effort, which would indicate that additional distance would prove no detriment. Indicative was second to Chuck Thomp-sQn in track record time of 1:10% at Bowie and came-back over the local strip to finish third in back of Olympia Wiz and Impromptu in 1:10% with an even effort. He, too, should be able to handle the additional distance of the Maryland Medical Purse. Night Bell won three straight sprint races before meeting defeat here last Saturday in a race in which he was a distant trailer. A good speed horse, he should be in contention during the early stages of tomorrows race, the. distance of which might prove too trying. Drop kick and Abbe Dryad appear to ambitiously placed against the aforementioned sextet.
