Switch On Captures Suffolk Sprint Earns Driving Win Over Isle of Bond Coy Urges Colella Gelding Ahead in Stretch to Score By Full Length and a Half By JOE HIRSCH SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 4. — A driving spurt past the sixteenth pole carried G. S. Colellas Switch On to a thrilling score in the featured Johnny Desmond Purse today, Alphonso Coy-rushing the four-year-old Condiment gelding past the pace-setting favorite Isle of Bond to tally by a length and a half. The latter edged Joe Spinellis Cable Jack for place honors by a thrusting nose, while Mr. and-Mrs. J. M. Lingles Larry Ellis closed with a flourish to finish fourth. The crowd of 11,563 who turned out in sunny, humid weather witnessed an entertaining feature. Switch On returned 2.40 and accomplished the fastest six panels of the meeting — 1:10%. For Coy the triumph marked a double, the Pennsylvania youngster having tallied in the fifth race with Count Breeze. The jockey and trainer, Johnny Nerud, posed in the winners circle with the popular crooner Johnny Desmond, who presently is playing the Hub. Switch Ons win was his first of the season. He raced in good allowance company in Florida this season and won four races, earned over 5,000 in 1954. He also handled a respectable field in the feature, Larry Ellis, Dudley Darbury and Yock-T.om all ranking with the better handicap horses on the grounds at sprint and middle distances. Yock Tom Breaks on Top Yock Tom, who enjoyed a good measure of success in Miami this" winter, broke on top in the Desmond followed by the fleet Hat Box and Dudley Darbury. Isle of Bond, hustled along the rail by the veteran Frank Solimena, took over after a furlong had passed and showed the way down the far side, a half length to the good of Yock Tom, who was a head in front of Red Red Robin. Switch On was another length back. Isle of Bond drew out to a three length advantage curving for the wire, Yock Tom still closest and Switch On now moving up to third place. Straightening for the final run, Isle of Bond looked like a good thing when Coy hit Switch On several times and the big chestnut shot forward in the final sixteenth, covering large chunks of ground with tremendous strides for the win. C. B. Fischbachs Mis-Guide made all the pace in the sixth event, but it was the dubonnet and emerald colors of the Hub restaurateur, Herbie Ehrlich, that scored by three parts of a length as his Lofty Legion got up in the final strides to edge E. A. Simpsons Legate for top money, with Sid Lipmans Lunar Park a length and a half farther back in tlnrd position. The crowd liked Irving Gushens Cold Jack, and when the latter made his move at the head of the stretch it looked like he might flatter his backers. But Paul Bo-henko hustled Lofty Legion down the middle of the track and nailed down the tally. Lofty Legion returned 0.60 and got the six furlongs in 1:11%. Ehrlichs trainer, Willie Causey, claimed Lofty Legion at Lincoln Downs for ,000 on April 11. The next time out he was running for ,750 and won by four and one-half lengths. Today he was in for ,000, so it looks like Willie, a veteran horseman, made a pretty good claim. Lofty Legion, a four -year-old son of Phalanx, showed little as a sophomore, winning a single race. Curving for home, Lunar Park cut Mis- Guides advantage to a length and one-half as Bohenko began moving up with Lofty Legion on the outside. Entering the stretch, Mis-Guide still enjoyed a half length lead, with Lunar Park and now Lofty Legion in attendance. Here Cold Jack came off the rail behind the pacemaker and attempted to drive past Mis-Guide, but was lacking. Legate came up with a rush, but Lofty Legion raced evenly down the middle and wore down Legate. Norquay and Beach Bull paid 6 in the Daily Double, one of the smallest of the young New England season. i
