Fitzsimmons and Hirsch Pass Up Kentucky Derby Both Veterans and Ben Jones Scheduled to Receive Awards • BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 4. — James Fitzsimmons, the sage of Sheepshead Bay and trainer of the Kentucky Derby favorite, Nashua, from the Belair Stud, announced this morning that he would not go to Louisville for the Derby. The veteran in discussing the matter this morning stated that the trip and excitement would be too severe a task. Fitzsimmons during the past, few weeks has been the victim of colds and a touch of the virus which drained his usual good health. Fitzsimmons, Max Hirsch and Ben Jones were to be honored guests at a celebration in Louisville Friday night, at which they would be presented with plaques to honor their saddling of three or more winners of the Kentucky Derby. Hirsch this morning stated that he would be unable to make the trip due to press of business here. Hirsch has a full schedule over the week end, -and this morning received another draft of horses owned by the King Ranch, a dozen two-year-olds. John Fitzsimmons, who will saddle Nashua on Saturday, will accept the plaque in his fathers absence, while Hirsch will name a recipient to sub for him. Fitzsimmons will view the Derby on television, while Hirsch stated that he hopes the one that he has in the stable office is in good working condition.
