McGUIRE WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., June 18. After taking shots at the big races for three-year-olds all season, W L Ranchs Californian, Honeys Alibi, finally landed one when he was a ridden out winner of the first edition of the Chicagoan mile feature here today. At the end of the stiffly contested tussle, the winning son of Alibhai Honeymoon was under hand pressure from jockey Don Scurlock to cross the finish line with a margin of a length and a half over Harvey C. Fruehauf s fast-finishing Blue Lem as Make Ready was a smashing third for Dixiana, only a neck away. Following the running of the Chicagoan, a presentation was made to trainer- Joe Inzelone for the winning owners by J. Samuel Perlman, editor and publisher of Daily Racing Form who is visiting this city. Winner Earns 9,400. The winner earned 9,400 of the gross purse of 2,500 by his score and was overlooked in the wagering by. the crowd of 20,784 who made Clifford Mooers Traffic Judge the choice, to return 3.80. The bulky field of 24 was reduced to 17 starters with the withdrawal of Hasty House Farms pair of Prince Noor and Summer Solstice, Everglades Farms Nances Lad, who was reported suffering from a fever; Fairway Farms Big Broadcast, and Armer and Nails Roman Senator. Honeys Alibi was sent over the mile in 1:36 Vs under his 114 pounds, the same weight carried under the conditions of the race by all the starters. Three stalls of the auxiliary starting gate were pressed into service to get the field Continued on Page Eight 1 " 1 ; 1 " Honeys Alibi Upset Victor in Chicagoan Turns Back Blue Lem and Make Ready; 20,784 Out For Final Balmoral Card Continued from Page One away, but the start was an excellent one. The contestants were spread well across the track in good alignment, but soon it was E. Gay Drakes Dogoon who was able to outrun the others as he raced before Trim Destiny and Speed Rouser down the back lane. Munchausen soon joined this group, but Dogoon continued to hold sway as the leaders swung off the backstretch. Here the eventual winner, who had never been far away, swung around the outside to make his move and by the time he had reached the turn into the home lane he had dead aim oh Dogoon. Dogoon was spent and wilted into the discard after a very creditable- effort and it was only in the stretch that Blue Lem entered the picture seriously. He had trailed early and reached closer contention only gradually, but when set down in the final quarter he swept up quickly on the outside in a game but belated effort to overhaul the winner. Munchausen had been in the thick of contention from the beginning and in the stretch drew on almost equal terms with the leaders as Honeys Alibi was taking over command post from Dogoon, but he faltered slightly under the extreme pressure of the final few yards. Trim Destiny likewise weakened somewhat from his efforts at forcing the early pace of Dogoon, but held on with determination to finish fifth. Traffic Judge Unable to Rally . Traffic Judge, racing on the outside and forwardly, appeared to be under strong wraps and it was expected that he would deliver a stout stretch bid from his vantage point clear of interference, but he appeared to hang when placed to punishment and could not make any inroads on the leaders. Montenegrin, a five-year-old owned by the Jay Kay Stable, won the Hygro Purse, the secondary feature that was run as the sixth race. Responding to the urging of Raymond Camp in the stretch, Montene- grin took command an eighth out and won by three lengths from Pelous. The latter in turn nosed out Uncased. Montenegrin was the third choice and paid .40 in the six-: furlong dash, Johnny Adams rode two of the early winners when he won the opener with the favored Blackamoor and took the fifth with Head for Home. Both horses were well backed, with Montenegrin being a short-" priced favorite. He managed to best Grand Spice by a narrow margin. Head for Home won his race, but staged a strong stretch run. Donke Serenade led all the way in the second race with William Carstens in the saddle, while Tee J. H., with Al Popara up, " took the third, and Miss Burke, ridden by William Cox, the fourth.
