; . ; : . 1 1 1 Haskell Makes Statement On Match Race Proposal Tells of Details Discussed With Owners of Swaps, Nashua MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 18. Amory L. Haskell, president of Monmouth Park Jockey Club, made the following statement today: "As one interested in the sport of thoroughbred racing in several capacities, a sport which is currently the leading spectators sport of the United States, naturally I followed very closely all the efforts which have been made in various sections of the country to stage a contest between Swaps, establisher of the worlds record in Hollywood Park in a weight-for-age contest on June 11, and Nashua, the horse that, while defeated in the Kentucky Derby by Swaps, established a track record in the Preakness at Pimlico on May 28, and won the Belmont Stakes on June 11 at Belmont Park by nine lengths. "Prompted by suggestions from those interested in the sport of thoroughbred racing and in View of the offers publicly made by other sections of the country, I contacted Messrs. Woodward and Ellsworth, offering Monmouth Park as a site in the East for the holding of a match race between Swaps and Nashua. "I told them that Monmouth Park was prepared to offer a purse of 00,000 and an additional sum of 5,000, either to be included in the purse and earmarked for charity, or in addition to the purse, the charity to be selected by the owner of the winner of the match race. "In view of the fact that the sporting owners of these two great horses have indicated a willingness to give the public an opportunity, at some time and at some place mutually agreeable, to again see these two great horses in action, and in view of the fact that it was the desire of Messrs. Woodward and Ellsworth that no publicity be given to the offer made to them, through me by Monmouth Park, I am disappointed to read of any premature discussion of the details of this offer."
