Illinois State Amateur Golf Meet Starts Monday at Savoy One hundred and ninety-two golfers will challenge Jim Frisina, of Taylorville, the defending champion, in the 25th annual Illinois State Amateur Golf Championship, which gets underway over the University of Illinois course at Savoy, on Monday. Sponsored by the Chicago District Golf Association, the week-long medal and match test will determine the ultimate winner of the Governor Louis L. Emmerson trophy. A 36-hole qualifying round, 18 holes on Monday and another 18 on Tuesday, will pare the field to 63 low scorers to join Frisina for 18-hole matches Wednesday, to be followed by two rounds of match play Thursday and Friday and the 36-hole finals next Saturday. Five former Illinois amateur champions are in the field, Gus Moreland, of Peoria 1940; Harold E. Foreman, Jr., of Highland Park 1944-1945-1951; Mike Stolarik, of Waukegan 1943 ; Norando Nannini, of Highwood 1949 and John Hobart, of Moline 1935-1950. Foreman and Frisina each have won three times. Frisina took the title in 1942, 1947 and 1954. Also entered are George Victor, of Golf, former Great Lakes and Dixie amateur king; Buzzy Wohl, of Chicago, runner-up in last years state amateur and current holder of the Chicago Midwest Amateur and French Lick, Ind., Midwedt Amateur titles, Bernard Magnussen, of Winnetka, 1955 Illinois high school golf champion, and Bob Bither, of Hinsdale, a Stanford sophomore who won the 1954 Chicago District Golf Association Junior closed in 1954.
