Small Providence Field Anticipated Saratoga Certain to Rule Heavy Choice for 5,000 Gdnsett Feature Wednesday NARRAGANSETT PARK, Tawtucket, R. I., June 18. Wednesdays Providence Stakes, with its purse of 5,000 making it the richest of the meeting, appears likely to draw only a small field. At the most it may attract seven, but from present indications, five looks like the top number of starters. This mile and an eighth race, which is restricted to sophomores, will be headed by Montpeliers Saratoga, who finished a smashing second to Belair Studs Nashua in the Preakness Stakes and then triumphed in the Leonard Richards at Delaware. Joe Mergler, assistant trainer to Frank Bonsai, is expected to arrive with the Blenheim II. Shipshape H. colt over the week end. At this moment, Saratoga appears a! strong favorite. The only rivals seen at this writing are M. M. Gettingers Chris Cross, Lazy F. Ranchs Door Prize, Starr Ranchs Colbert and Hash Weinsteins Mr. Al. L. Hope Mandil Will Be Shipped Other possibilities whom Ty Shea is trying to entice are George Wideners Mandil and one of the Christianas pair of Stipend and Thinking. Saratoga is certain to be favored off his record, the most impressive of which was his second in the Preakness and his Richards score. In the former mile and three sixteenths race, he was beaten only at the wire after forcing Nashua to his hardest. In addition, Saratoga has won the Chesapeake Stakes this year. Mr. Al L. managed to win one race this year, then was a distant third in the Belmont Stakes, won by Nashua. Colbert, who only broke his maiden here the other day, may be the dark horse. Owned by the Starr Ranch and trained by the capable J. L. Clarke, he merely romped hi his lone effort here, winning by seven and a half lengths. He obviously likes the track and though his class has not been tested, he may be hard to eliminate. Chris Cross, has been an improving sort and won the mile Constitution Handicap at Suffolk. In that he defeated Star Rover and Door Prize. The .latter had previously been tested over the grass in a division of the Commonwealth but had poor racing luck. With the Belmont and Richards being run last Saturday and the Shevlin this week end in New York, the "three-year-old horse colony must necessarily have to be drawn to a thin line. But with the presence of Saratoga", Gansett fans will be seeing one of the better sophomores in the nation.
