New Jersey Breeders Elect Dr. R. J. Fosbinder President Maintains Clearfield Farm in Skeeter State; Homebred s Doing Well at Monmouth By ARTHUR E. JAMES FREEHOLD, N. J., June 18. At a special meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Thoroughbred Horse Breeders Association of New Jersey, held at Monmouth Park, last Tuesday, Dr. Russell J. Fos-binder of Clearfield Farm, Peapack was elected president. Dr. Fosbinder, recently retired as president of Maltbie Chemical Company in Newark, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry and medical physiology at Wisconsin and then entered the chemical industry serving several years in research activities before entering the administrative end of the business. Dr. Eosbinder has bred and raised hunter and show horses for a number of years and has been an active member of the Essex Hunt. Three years ago he purchased three mares and last year sent his first yearlings to the sales ring at Saratoga. He and Mrs. Fosbinder recently returned from Ireland where they purchased the mare Star Sapphire in- foal to Arctic Prince from the Irish National Stud. Dr. Fosbinder will sell-again this year but is switching his consignment from Saratoga to the Garden State Fall Sales. Armstrong Named Vice-President Others elected by the board were F. Wallis Armstrong, Jr. of Meadowview Farms, Moorestown, as vice-president, Jean A. Chianese and Mark M. Jones were renamed as secretary and treasurer, respectively, and David O. Evans and H. L. Machado will also serve for the year as vice-presidents. Elected to fill an interim term was Alfred Roberts, New Jersey owner and breeder. New Jersey-bred horses started the Monmouth Park meeting with winning ways for on opening day three races, including the feature race, were taken by them. The first Jersey-winner of the opener was Carolyn K. Stables two-year-old Hi-Sag who is highly regarded for the forthcoming New Jersey Futurity. The Oceanport Handicap winner Dark Peter Piping Rock Dark Maiden was bred and raised only a few miles from Monmouth Park at Howard M. Stacks Lincroft Farm. The third winner was Mr. First, a "half -brother to Uncle Miltie, owned by Castle Rock Farm, and was foaled at Charlie Johnsons Bemadotte Farm in Tinton Falls. Other Jersey-bred winners the first five days were Decimal and Five-By-Five. Sunday, June 12 marked the anniversary of Eddie Feakes thirtieth year as Manager of Amory L. Haskells Woodland Farm. If Ed is any less enthused about Woodland and the horses after 30 years it is hard to discern on the surface. It is said that Anne Delaney is being scouted for a movie contract after her appearance on WATV, Channel 13 last Wednesday. Anne appeared on a panel program with Ed Feakes and this writer. Kelly Visits Jersey Farms Pat Kelly of Crown Crest Farm, passed through New Jersey on a missionary trip during the past week visiting Monmouth Park, Del Brier, Bernadotte and several other thoroughbred farms in the vicinity. Mention of Bernadotte reminds us that Charlie Johnsons farm is becoming a mecca for weary horsemen since he has in- stalled a beautiful 20x40 ft. swimming pool. Charlie, among his many varied enterprises, is an eastern distributor for Paradise Pools, a newly developed low-cost plastic pool. Blen Host is Your Hosts second two-year-old stakes winner in California. His first stakes winner was Miss Todd . . . Townsend B. Bartin has shipped his mare Halya from James Cox Bradys Hamilton Farm, Gladstone, where she was bred to Casemate. Martin has also shipped the mares As Ever and Farruca from Larry MacPhails Glenangus Farm to Bernadotte. They were bred to General Staff and Sea Charger . . . The George Gordon Patons have brought their two mares Santas Vixen and Soothe back to their Lambertville farm. Santas Vixen was bred to Market Wise and Soothe was bred to Okapi . . . Justin Funkhouser is sending a mare to New Jersey next season to foal and to be bred to a New Jersey stallion. The mare will remain in the Garden State thereby making her foals eligible to run in Jersey-bred races . . . The Vineland owner Paul Cresci won his first race at Monmouth with Papa Tony. Cresci purchased two Market Wise yearlings last fall from Marise Farm.
