Newmarket Maid Repeats In River Downs Sprint Clocked Five-Eighths in :59Ys; Easily Defeats Country Lane By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, Cincinnati, Ohio, June 18. The weatherman provided another delightful day for the upward of 10,000 fans on hand for the days thoroughbred sport and the form players were well rewarded for the most part. K. Kitchen and Doug Davis, Jr.s Newmarket Maid turned in her second consecutive victory in the fourth race here this" afternoon. It was the "two-year-old Citation Rosary II. fillys third start of her career and with jockey Jack Chestnut in the saddle, she galloped the ffhal stages of the five furlongs in :59, a full second off the 30-year-old track record. However, Chestnut did not seem to be pressing her very much through the stretch and it is quite probable that she could have shaved several fifths of- a second off the record, if not breaking it, with a bit more pressure applied. At the end of the race she had a length and one-half on William H. Mays Country Lane and jockey W. D. Lucas and the latter pair were an easy two and one-quarter lengths the best of Mrs. R. E. McCohnells Toy Again. As a 4-to-5 favorite, Newmarket Maid rewarded her followers with a .50, .00 and .40 across the board mutuel. W. R. Fischer and L. D. Fruchtmans Flaneur and jockey Luis Rivera took down the top honors in the opener, the first .half of the Daily Double and the K. and O. Stables Top Attraction was returned the victor in the second under Howard Craigs guidance. The combination was worth 0.80 in the Daily Double. The Oxford, a six-furlong dash for sophomores exclusively, holds the spotlight on Mondays card. Designed for those to be claimed for ,000, there are nine which have accepted the issue and will be vying for a portion of the ,400 purse. This group includes W. U. Ridenours Peace Date, Mrs. W. Clines Choice Pick, Froome Barbours Pick-Up Girl, Hi-Acres Stock Farms Bird Call, J. C. Ellis Romp and Play, Mrs. I. Yunker and D. Tylers Do Be Tee, Mrs. S. H. Zachars Battle Rib bon, W. F. Scotts Twenty-Five and L. T. Schavels Idas Choice. Choice Pick was in the only dead heat for win at this meeting in the Fort Thomas Continued on Page Fifty-One NewmarketMaid Repeats In River Downs Sprint Clocked Five-Eighths in :592s; Easily Defeats Country Lane Continued from Page Three Optimist Club Purse last Tuesday. True Bruce, who rah in the interest of A. B. Ciccohe, and the Joes Choice filly were four and one-half lengths the best of their closest rival, F. Merrys Expressive. The time for the mile and one-sixteenth over a very heavy track was 1:54. However, analyses following the running of the race resulted in a ruling by the stewards depriving True Bruce of his share of the purse on a stimulation charge. Do Be Tee, Battle Ribbon, Idas Choice and Pick-Up Girl finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively behind B. Frys Isotrope, and W. Strongs Ten-O-Two in the Lexington Purse. The strip was officially classified as good but had some fast strips through it and the winners time was a commendable 1:13 for ,500 three-year-olds. Isotropes winning margin was a short head and Ten-O-Two had but a half length on Do Be Tee and the latter should have improved considerably over that effort. It is not improbable that some of the support in the wagering will be in behalf of the Yunker and Tyler colorbearer.
