Betty Barr in Stunning Upset at ThistleDown Carver Filly Defeats Luciete; Pays Straight Mutuel of 8 By J. R. BATTY THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 18. Mrs. L. M. Carvers Betty Barr, who had won but one race previously in her career, registered a stunning upset when triumphing in the ,000 added Imp Handicap here today. The winner, a three-year-old daughter of Natchez Cocktail Bar, was the lowest-weighted member of the field of 11 fillies and mares which competed in the six-furlong dash. . Toting 103 pounds, Betty Barr earned a net purse of ,157 after arriving at the wire a length and three quarters before John Zitniks Luciete, who deprived the place award by a head margin from Mrs. L. L. Voigts Solar System, highweight under 118 pounds of the group and also most heavily backed in the wagering.- With Charlie McKee in the saddle, Betty Barr sprinted the distance over a fast track in 1:11 flat, fastest time hung out at the current meeting. Scattered followers of Betty Barr among the crowd of 11,374 collected 8 at the straight windows. Leonard G. Changeaway, with apprentice Bobby Wall aboard, paid 0.60 at the straight windows after defeating Teddys Picnic by two and one-half lengths, while Jett-Belle, favorite in this dash of six furlongs, was third. Changeaway made the pace throughout and the seven-year-old gelded son of Whirlaway Never Chance was clocked in 1:12 as he won his first purse in four outings this season. Okeechobee, owned by Dr. A. L. Birch, registered a surprise tally and graduated from the maiden ranks by accounting for the second race, a test of five and one-half furlongs. Guided by Paul A. Ward, the meetings leading reinsman, Okeechobee proved best by two and one-half lengths over Heureux, who had speed until the stretch, but lasted for the place, although faltering noticeably in the late stages. Short Cable came along to be third among the dozen who competed. Okeechobee paid 4.20 and was timed in 1:06. The combination of owner Birch and jockey Ward, successful in the second race, annexed the top portion of the purse in the fourth race with the eight-year-old gelding Bunker scoring the victory in this route test of one and one-quarter miles. Bunker subdued the favorite Windy by nearly two lengths, and another furlong back Ethel Stone gained the show award. Bunker was timed 2 : 06 and paid .20.
