Errard King to Begin Stud Duty Next Spring . I Gavegnano Colt Scored in Classic And American Derby Last Season By JOE THOMAS LEXINGTON, Ky., June 18. Owner Joseph Gavegnano departed for his Winthrop, Mass., home today after spending a few days in the Blue Grass formulating plans for the future stud career of his brilliant racer Errard King. The New England baker, who has enjoyed keen success in his turf operations, has decided to retire the son of Errard to stud next spring. Gavegnano found considerable interest in Errard Kings stud prospects and already has a number of requests for services on file, some dating back to the end of the colts two-year-old campaign. That season Errard King won six of nine starts, including four important eastern stakes. They included the mile and one-sixteenth Pimlico Futurity by eight lengths, the Worlds Playground Stakes at seven furlongs by seven lengths, the Longport Handicap under op weight of 126 pounds by five, and the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth. He earned 17,700 and an assignment of 121 pounds on the Experimental Handicap. Errard King last year added nearly 00,-000 more to his total. He won the Experimental Free Hanudicap -by three lengths from Fisherman in 1:10 in April, but an injury sidelined him and he missed the spring three-year-old specials. During the summer, however, he proved to be the "king? of the midwestern three-year-olds. He captured both the Arlington Classic and the American Derby. The one-mile Classic proved an end-to-end victory for the Gavegnano colt and he reached the wire two and a half lengths before Helioscope, High Gun, Jet Action, Hasty Road and eight others. His time was an excellent 1 :35. In the American Derby, at a mile and one-eighth he prompted the early pace of Hasty Road, took command straightening out in the stretch, and prevailed at the end by two lengths over High Gun. He covered the distance in 1:49, carrying co-top-weight of 124 pounds with High Gun and Hasty Road. In his Daily Racing Form Free Handicap, M. C. "Ty" Shea assigned Errard King 127 pounds, ranking him below only the equal top weights, Determine, Helioscope, High Gun and Turn-to, who received 130. Only one horse of his generation was above Errard King on both the Experimental and Daily Racing Form Free Handicaps the brilliant, but unfortunate Turn-to. Errard King, a natural miler, apparently inherited most of his speed from his sire, Errard, one of the most successful and popular stallions in the Blue Grass. But he also has a strain of stamina. His dam is a half-sister of Air Cooled, dam of the outstanding stayer Pilaster. Gavegnano was pleased with the reception he received here, and, although no definite program for his horse was adopted, he hopes to be able to make an announcement in the near future.
