Six Face Straight Face In Aqueducts Edgemere Fabulist, Southarlington Sure To Give Greentree Ace Battle By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y June 24. Greentree Stables battle-scarred Straight Face heads a field of seven Saturday in . the forty-third running of the Edgemere . Handicap at a mile and one furlong. The Count Fleet five-year-old gelding has the moderate topweight of 123 pounds in this Edgemere and will vie for favoritism with High Tide Stables improving Fabulist, who carries 119 pounds. If all seven go postward, the Edgemere will gross 8,300 and net 9,250 to the winner. Straight Face was a stake winner at two, three and four, with notable victories in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, Flamingo, Dixie Handicap and Suburban to his credit, while he forced Native Dancer to the limit in. last years Metropolitan Mile. Never an entirely sound horse, John Gavers charge suffered devastating injuries in the Everglades Stakes two weeks before his Flamingo triumph, and has experienced most of the ills that can befall a thoroughbreds underpinning since then, but has always been able to come back. His first two starts this year were disappointing, but showed last week" end that Continued on Page Six Six Face Straight Face in Edgemere Fabulist Dangerous At Four-Pound Pull Southarlington Goes into Aqueduct Stake With Three Straight Wins Under Belt Continued from Page On he was his old self by stepping a mile in 1:38 in handy style and breezed five fur- longs in 1:01 on Thursday. Ted Atkinson will be trying for his third Edgemere score tomorrow, while Greentree Stable will be seeking its fifth victory in the stake, having won it twice with Hash, once with The Rhymer and once with One Hitter, all of whom became stallions. Fabulist won the Queens County Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth on opening day here with eight pounds less in the saddle and was one of the very few horses to be able to win while staying on the inside rail during the Belmont Park meeting-. Eric Guerin replaces Atkinson on the four-year-old Mighty Story gelding, who turned back three of those he meets tomorrow in the Queens County. These are Woodley Lane Farms Red Hannigan, who finished second; Ethel D. Jacobs Paper Tiger, who finished fourth, beaten almost five lengths, and Mrs. Edward Laskers Lychhus, who was a distant eighth. Paper Tiger gets in with 114 pounds, having a seven-pound shift in relation to Fabulist, while Lychnus is the lightweight of the field .with 107. Red Hannigan, who was beaten three lengths, carries, 116 pounds tomorrow, a shift of three pounds in his favor. Bailey to Ride Red Hannigan Paul Bailey will again ride Red Hannigan, who may find the distance too long, while Conn McCreary will be on Paper Tiger, who came from last place with a belated rush in the Queens Counfy. No rider has, been named for Lychnus. Ogden Phipps Bassanio, who was winning major handicaps at this time a year ago, is in here with 108 pounds, most of which will be Sidney Cole, but has turned in his best races on harder tracks than Aqueduct. However, if the local strip should be sloppy tomorrow, the son of Bimelech could be a factor. The Edgemere field is completed by J. Ross Clark H.s Southarlington, who may be extremely dangerous with 116 pounds and Bill Boland. Thisxson of Errard came from behind to beat Fly Wheel in the j Brandywine Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth at Delaware Park on May 30 and has been training cleverly since then.
