Icarian Popular Victor In Feature at Aqueduct Is Fourth Successive, Favorite To Enter Winners Enclosure AQUEDUCT," L. I., N. Y., June 24. With Hedley Woodhouse struggling to keep him from lugging in through the long stretch, Apheim Stables icarian, scored a popular victory in the featured Muttontown Purse here today. The War Admiral gelding reached the end of the mile and a furlong three parts of a length before William C. Partees Winning Count, who had set the pace, while Joe W. Browns Mel Leavitt was another length and a half away after appearing in close quarters between the two leaders near the furlong pole. It was eight more lengths back to Flying L Stables Lucrative, who ran an improved race. The small field was completed by C. V. Whitneys Ming Yellow, who trailed all the way. The fourth successive winning favorite, Icarian paid his many admirers in the crowd of 17,819 that turned out in gray, gloomy weather at the rate of .40 for the customary minimum. Icarian required 1:52 for the mile and a furlong over a track that was beginning to "tighten," though it was still somewhat sloppy as the result of heavy rains last night and this morning. Winning Count Grabs Early Lead Paul Bailey sent Winning Count into a , daylight lead in the run to the clubhouse turn in the Muttontown, followed by Mel Leavitt and Lucrative, who raced a head apart, several lengths before Icarian. The order remained the same in the long run down the backstretch, with Winning Count widening his lead to more than four lengths nearing the far turn, while Icarian began to move up along the rail but was still in fourth place. Icarian continued to lead rounding the turns, while Woodhouse steered Icarian. to the outside passing the three-furlong pole and began his strong move which carried him into the lead turning for home. Mel Leavitt and Winning Count were a head apart, close behind Icarian as they straightened away for the, run home and Woodhouse switched his whip to the left hand as the favorite began to bear in. It appeared that Ray Broussard eased Mel Leavitt back nearing the furlong pole and Icarian continued to bear in toward Winning Count, despite Woodhouses efforts to keep him straight, but without actually brushing either Mel Leavitt or Winning Count. Icarian gradually edged away from Winning Count in the final sixteenth, while Mel Leavitt continued to lose ground. The Plandome Purse, secondary feature, resulted in a convincing victory by Rokeby Stables Blue Banner, who sped through six forlongs of slop in 1:11 to score by a little more than two lengths over Reginald N. Websters Sorceress, who was a strong second choice to the winner. Saxon Stables Brown Warbler was only a length farther back after being prominent all the way, while Nelson I. Asiels Tarqhilla finished with a rush to be only a head out of the money. Blue Banner, who was an unlucky third in her last start at Monmouth Park and captured a swiftly run sprint at Belmont Park before that, paid .10. Eddie Arcaro rode the bay daughter of War Admiral from Risque Blue, by Blue Larkspur, and kept her under intermittent pressure through the stretch as she scored with, a little speed in reserve. K t
