Bed Down Stakes Stars For Balmoral Meeting Judy Rullah, Swoons Son, Dogoon Among Arrivals at Washington HOMEWOOD, 111., May- 11.— With the Balmoral Jockey Club inaugurating its 30-day meeting Monday afternoon, contingents of horsemen and thoroughbreds are checking into the Washington Park stable area with increasing regularity. Just about, the time trainer Strother Griffin was bedding down his 14-hprse unit including three -year-old filly Judy Rullah, word was received by racing secretary Fred Burton that Maine Chance Farms Warning Bellwho finished third behind Doubledogdare and Guard Rail in the Ashland Stakes, will be shipped in from Kentucky for next Wednesdays 5,000 added Coronet Stakes for three-year-old fillies at six furlongs. Thus the big four of the three -year-old filly ranks — Doubledogdare, Judy Rullah, Guard Rail, and Supple — will have another with whom to contend in Wednesdays sprint. Just in today from Louisville, Ky., is a powerful six-horse string trained by A. G. Wilson checked in right after the 18-horse string trained by Elmer Kalensky which included three crack stakes performers owned by Chicagoan Bernard W. Landy — Spur On, Two Fisted, and Marks Rickey, whom Landy last week purchased privately from Angelo Cilio. Also in the Kalensky string is the good .three-year-old colt owned by Gregory and Maggio, Ben A. Jones, whose chief target at Balmoral is the 0,000 added Chicagoan on June 9. Twelve horses, part of the Hasty House Farm stable, also arrived, including Sea O Erin, who is aiming at the winners share in Mondays LaSalle Handicap. Also in from Kentucky is trainer Bennett Creech and stable star Styrunner, second in the recent Churchill Downs Handicap, and regarded as a definite starter in Mondays LaSalle. T" Happy Go Lucky in Bockman Unit Owner-trainer Harold G. Bockmaa is another late arrival for Mondays Balmoral opener. The popular horseman supervised the unloading of nine thoroughbreds, tops of which was Happy Go Lucky, a possible starter in Mondays featured LaSalle. Trainer Earl Knisley, one of many new horsemen making the. Chicago spring-summer circuit for the first time, has six horses quartered at Washington Park, including the good three-year-old Cleofosta, who is expected to make his Chicago debut in the 5,000 Domino Stakes, May 26. Knisley shipped in from California. J. J. Greely Jr., who trains for R. W. Mcllvains Walmac Farm, unloaded 20 thoroughbreds, including Vagabound King, recent allowance winner at Churchill Downs, and a principae in Mondays LaSalle. Balmorals meeting of 30 days is the first of 97 days of major coordinated racing, with the Arlington session of 36 days and Washington Parks own 31-day session to follow before the curtain rings down on Labor Day, September 3. Starting" with Mondays LaSalle, Balmoral will offer a total of j£255,000 in Stakes, there being nine others in addition to the LaSalle carded. The stakes program is headed by the Chicagoan for three-year-olds at one mile on June 9, and the Balmoral Turf Handicap for three-year-olds and upward at one and three-sixteenths miles on closing day, June 16. Both are 0,000 added events. The Citation Handicap over the dirt track will be the Memorial Day feature and will carry a purse of 0,000 added. Run Coronet on Wednesday The 5,000 Coronet for three-year-old fillies will headline the first Wednesday program, while the 0,000 added Continental Turf Handicap at a mile and a furlong will top the fust Saturday card. During the Balmoral meet, fans, will be introduced to Washington Parks new "all-weather" track Interiors. Giant air-conditioning and heating equipment has been installed to counteract both the cold and the heat, so come what may in the line of weather, the track- management is pre-pared to handle it. The backstretch also has received its share of improvements, with all 464 tack rooms in the stable area hot-water heated. Also both dining rooms at Washington Park, in the clubhouse and grandstand, are air-conditioned and sound-proofed this year. Again featured for 1956 during the Bal-moral-at-Washington Park meeting will be the most efficient escalator system in sports — seven units — serving all levels of the clubhouse and grandstand. Another 1956 improvement is paved parking for 15,000 cars on the tracks own grounds, plus emergency repair trucks to give immediate and free service to any auto patrons for minor auto trouble — like a motor stall, locked door, etc. Auto patrons also will be served by free buses to and from far parking lots during every racing day at Balmoral. Immediately after the last race, buses will load at the finish line in front of the grandstand.
