Argentina Intrusa Beats Ficha, Only Conqueror; Olifa7 Montmarte Register Successes ; By DAVID K. GUNN : Our Buenos Aires Correspondent BUENOS AIRES, Argentina. — At the Saturday meeting staged at Palermo, practically the same field of mares went to the post for the Premio Espirita, a feature over 11 furlongs, that turned„out for the Arturo R. Bullrich classic over a mile and a quarter 10 days previously. It will be recalled that the mare, Intrusa, was deprived of her i ! j 1 J J , , J | , I J ; unbeaten certificate in jthe latter contest, though most undeservedly. In this, their fresh , encounter, In- trusa clashed with her casual conqueror on seven pounds better terms. Backed down to less than even money, Intrusa simply walked her opponents, winning on a tight rein by two lengths f r b m useful Vedanta, with Ficha, who had deprived her of her unbeaten title, another couple of lengths farther back. The winner covered the 11 furlongs in 2:15% on slow going. Bred at Haras Argentine under whose colors she. races, Intrusa is by Gulf Stream Hyperion , out of Idea, by Ipe, from Relation, by Re-echo Neil Gow. As high class mares are at a premium for the time being, Intrusa should farm the classics to good purpose during the rest of the season. Even allowing for a slight following wind, two-year-old Olifa, at the same "meeting, won her maiden race in spectacular fashion, breaking 57 seconds for the fivefur-long journey. She placed once previously, and gained promotion the third time of asking. Byimported Nearco Pharos , she is out of Hita, by Diadoque, from Hoplita, by Hunters Moon, and was bred at Dr. Jorge de Atuchas Haras El Pelado. Orsino was bred in England, but was exported to the United States in 1946, where he won a couple of races, besides being placed several times, it was during one of his visits to the United States that Dr. Atucha purchased Orsiho. Locally, he has not gained distinction for himself as a stud. A A .* On Sunday at San Isidro, the feature at this picturesque course was offered in the Premio San Isidro, a weight-for-age contest for horses three years and upwards over 3,000 meters about 15 furlongs. There were only five acceptances for this annual important event, which had been captured twice previously 1954 arid 1955 by South Americas champion horse, Man-ganga, and who again was stripped for the same race. The field included the bracketed pair, Nino Luis and Casanova, a brace of high class three-year-olds. Manganga was last years champion performer, a winner, among other important races, of the Gran » * Premio Carlos Pellegrini, in which he defeated the crack .three-year-old colt, Tatan. Last January, he won the Gran Premio Jose P. Ramirez at Maronas, Uruguay, again defeating Tatan, though by a narrow margin. Laming after that, he missed his engagement in the equally important Gran Premio Municipal also run at Maronas which was won by Tatan by the length of a street from Remember and Nino Luis; the winner breaking the track time record. Pronounced sound again, Manganga, who had been working well, went out for a third consecutive triumph in the Gran Premio San Isidro. In this event, he should have, been opposed once again by his deadly rival, Tatan, but the latters owner, Constantino Pelayo, out for bigger game, decided to ship his champion to San Pablo, Brazil to compete in the Gran Premio San Pablo, also contested on May 6. Though Tatan ran boldy, being beaten half a length by the Brazilian, Adil, he failed to reproduce his best form, probably on account of the unsound going. Tatan had finished second to Manganga in the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini, just a shade ahead of Adil, who turned the tables on his erstwhile conqueror in the Pellegrini. AAA With Tatan out of the way, Sundays Gran Premio San Isidro looked like a gift for the undisputed champion, Manganga, •who was backed accordingly. But those of us who had a close look at him in the ring were not quite so optimistic as the public in general. He was as lean as crow bait, and had a fed-up-with-life look. Early in the race, he was laboring to keep in touch with the leader, Casanova, whose mission was to take the starch out of the champion in the interest of his stable companion, Nino Luis. Manganga dropped out early in the homestretch, leaving the race apparently at the mercy of Nino Luis. But scarcely had the latter assumed command when he was subjected to a storming challenge from Montmartre, the outsider of the party, who, showing indomitable courage in a photo finish, drove on to win a great race by a head, with Bumpy a bad third. The winner, just a good handicap horse, covered the distance in 3:05%. So Manganga and Tatan experienced defeat Continued on Page Forty-Six Report From Argentina By DAVID R. GUNN Continued from Page Nine . on the same day though in different countries. Chaton, last weeks winner of the Premio Old Man, over six furlongs, in which he narrowly defeated an outstanding colt in Holandes, will next be saddled for his engagement in the Raul y Raul E. Chevalier classic over seven furlongs, to be run at Palermo, May 13. This two-year-old colt has had a brief, though distinguished racing career. Making his debut in March in the Guillermo Kemmis over five furlongs, he ran sixth, about a couple of lengths behind the winner, Kurdo. He won his maiden race over five furlongs, beating Alcoy in a common canter. Stripped for the Santiago Luro over six furlongs, he defeated with consummate ease the Guillermo Kemmis winner, Kurdo. Thus, the son of Chispeado Selim Hassan has won three races in four starts. In paint of physique, he is not a particularly attractive individual, being a shade on the small side and short of substance. On the other hand, he demonstrated that his heart" is in the right place when he pegged back Honlan-des in a driving finish. It is much too early in the season to talk about future champions, but Chaton should be regarded as a good, honest colt, although maybe not the makings of a real classic horse. At the same meeting, two-year-old Cabila, winner of the Carlos Casares and Saturnino J. Unzue classics over five and six furlongs, respectively, is scheduled to make her third appearance in the Premio Eliseo Ramirez, over seven furlongs. Although she will be opposed by some of the seasons outstanding fillies, it is almost certain she will retain her unbeaten certificate, for the greater the distance, the better she should like it on "breeding lines. Only one filly likely to stretch Cabila in forthcoming clashes is Eastern Charm, British Empires speedy daughter, who finished third to Chaton in the Premio Old Man, only half a length back. It is quite unusual in this country for fillies to oppose colts in the "early classic. Whether Eastern Charm couples stamina with speed remains to be seen. Heretofore, British Empires offspring,, with rare exceptions, have not distinguished themselves in races that demand a modicum of staying power. AAA Veiy rarely indeed does a top-class sprinter gain distinction over distance. In fact, they can scarcely be handicapped to win over a mile, even in moderate company. •Throughout her racing career, three-year-old Nia, a daughter of imported Snowfall Sansovino, has earned quite a bit of money in sprints. At an early stage, she was not particularly outstanding- but, as she gained maturity, improved out of all knowledge, and this season has been showing brilliance in top-class company, not infrequently being weighted up to the hilt. However, she has never won a race around a bend, all her triumphs being gained in sprints of five to six furlongs — a straight run. The other day, her connections decided to try her out over seven furlongs. Shouldering 130 pounds and conceding as much as 17 pounds to some of her opponents, she won in a Cakewalk, setting up 1 :23- f lat for the distance. She is a probable starter for the Premio Peru, at a mile at San Isidro next Saturday. It will be. interesting to see how she behaves in that event, in which she will mingle in pretty hot company. Perhaps she wont stay, her recent triumph over seven furlongs notwithstanding. And probably she will be purchased by a Venezuelan stable. Another brilliant sprinter who eventually fetched up in the United States, where he also won races, is Preceptor. Locally he won race after race in distances up to six furlongs and on one occasion scored with 65 kilos approximately 10 stone, 31 pounds up. A curious characteristic of this formidable individual was that he was invariably a back-runner, his forte being a sizzling burst of speed turned on half a furlong from the winning post. Never a willing horse, he always had to be ridden out to the bitter end. But never was there a gamer horse. It might be added that he failed dismally to win a race around a bend. We often wondered if his trainer in USA was put wise to his tendency of lurking in the background until the race was practically over. When purchasing an Argentine race horse, it is good medicine to find out his likes and dislikes, and train him accordingly.
