► — i Golf Ace Has Ten Challengers In Jamaica s 9, 400 Withers ° Eiffel Blue, Will of Allah, Son of Erin, Born Mighty Also in Historic Stakes By BOB HORWOdD JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 11.— A new and somewhat revised edition of the Withers Stakes, eighty-first running of the ancient fixture, is on the agenda at Jamaica tomorrow. This will be the first running at Jamaica of the stake which was inaugurated at Jerome Park in 1874 and won by Dublin. While always an event at a flat mile and known as the Withers mile when run at Jerome and Morris Parks and at Belmont Park since the opening of that spacious plant in 1905," this years Withers will be at a mile and a sixteenth, a change in distance necessitated by the change in track. Ho Aqueduct Sprjng Meeting The change in track is, in turn, necessitated by the suspension of the spring meeting at Aqueduct, which has caused a drastic rearrangement of the dates and locale of spring and summer stakes on Loiig Island. An additional change in the historic Withers this year is the admission, for the first time, of geldings, a change which made Winding Way Farms Golfi Ace eligible for the fixture. j Golf Ace, who carries the same 126 pounds as the 10 named to oppose him tomorrow, might be favored, despite his miserable race on a sloppy track here on Monday. Bobby Ussery will again ride the gelded son of Escadru, who finished second to Needles in the Flamingo, fourth behind the same colt in the Florida Derby,. , Continued on Page Six ¥ ; ; ■ ■ • i ► ; Golf Ace Has Ten Challengers In Jamaicas 9,400 Withers Eiffel-Blue, Will of Allah, Son, of Erin, Born Mighty Also in Historic Stakes Continued from Page One won the Wood Memorial from Head Man, but was disqualified for bearing otit, and has given as good a judge as Jim Fitzsim-mons the impression that he was the best of the eastern three-year-olds. Golf Ace evidently has an acute aversion to slop, having turned in his only other bad race of the year on a similar strip in the Everglades Stakes at Hialeah. However, he also bore out repeatedly on Monday, an old habit. Danny Arnsteins Eiffel Blue, who won Mondays Greenvale Purse at the same distance by a mere dozen lengths, looms as Golf Aces chief rival. The: son of Eiffel Tower moves up vastly in wet footing, however, and may not be so formidable on the fast track in prospect tomorrow. "Peejay" Bailey is slated to ride. There will also be some support for C. V. Whitneys stretch-running Born Mighty, Mrs. Jan Burkes Swift Stakes winner, Son of Erin, who didnt like Mondays slop •much better than did Golf Ace; Isidor Biebers somewhat erratic Will of Allah and Mrs. Wallace Gilroys hard-hitting Oh Johnny., Lawless Brookmeade Hopeful For that matter, Brookmeade Stables Lawless, C. B. Fishbacks Frosty Mx*. and Laudy Lawrences Beau Diable have good enough races-in their recent past to rate consideration, while Adele L. Rands Irish Love and W. C. Partees Mr. Am could surprise, but not astonish, in what appears an exceedingly open race. If all 11 start, which is probable, this edition of the Withers will gross 9,400 and net the winner 0,350, plus some prestige accrued to such past winners as Sir Barton, Man o War, Alsab, Count Fleet, Hill Prince and Native Dancer, to name just a few of the best laureates of the old stake. Frosty Mr. was the upset winner of the-Chesapeake Stakes, in which Born Mighty finished very fast on the outside and made some observers think he Was actually best. Lawless has been training well since his dull race in the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah, an effort that followed some good ones. Oh Johnny showed fine form in Florida, where he won the Fountain of Youth Handicap and a couple of overnight events, then finished third behind Golf Ace and Head Man in the Wood for his only local outing. Will of Allah and Son of Erin finished a half length apart in that order when running third and fourth behind Eiffel Blue and Corax on Monday, but both are eligible to improve. Irish Love beat Mr. Am three and a half lengths at a mile and a sixteenth on a sloppy track here on April 26, but neither colt had much-behind him Stanley Small is coming up from Maryland to ride Frosty Mr., while Bill Boland will be back on Son of Erin and Ted Atkinson will again pilot Will of Allah. Eddie Arcaro will attract attention to Born Mighty, while Hedley Woodhouse is to guide Oh Johnny and Eric Guerin will be on Beau Diable.
