— • Eugenia Finally Arrives in U. S. Luro to Train Chilean Star, Owned by Hanger, for New Castle, Delaware Handicap STANTON, Del., May 11. — Eugenia, a four-year-old daughter of Brick — Eos who is said to be the pride of Chile, arrived at Miamis International Airport following weeks of red tape and clearance delays. She was purchased this Spring by W. Arnold Hanger, who acquired ner from owner -breeder German Reckmann, and is to be trained by the noted Argentine horseman, Horatio Luro. Eugenias main objective at the moment is the 50,000 gross Delaware Handicap, worlds richest race for fillies and mares and the climactic event of Delaware Parks, quarter-million-dollar Distaff Big Three. The Delaware is scheduled June 30, following the 0,000 New Castle Stakes, second of the Big Three tests, by one week. Eu-. genia also has been named for the latter test. Present plans call for the filly to be stabled at Belmont Park before she is [shipped to Delaware Park. According to Luro, who has handled such famed South American horses as Rico Monte, Talon and Miss Grillo, among others, Eugenias popularity in Chile is comparable to that of Nashua in the United States. Reports from Chile verify that statement, saying she won eight of 11 starts last season and earned a record amount of more than 60,000. Her triumphs included the El Ensayo, Chiles biggest stake. Won at Varying Distances She won her races easily, at distances ranging from five furlongs to a mile and a half. "She won 11 races as a two- and three-year-old, including their Oaks," says Luro. It would be nothing new for a Chilean race mare, Hanger or Luro to win the classic Delaware Handicap, known as the New Castle Handicap prior to 1955. In 1939, Shangay Lily, also from Chile, triumphed for W. V. McGrath arid trainer J. L. Roberts. In 1941, Dotted Swiss carried the Hanger silks to victory, saddled by Max Hirsch, and in 1948, Mill River StableV Miss Grillo, an Argentine racer conditioned by Luro, turned the trick. - In the all-important El Ensayo Stakes, Eugenia scored a typical victory. A Santiago turf expert wrote that she opened up an early lead of more than 15 lengths and" held it to the stretch, where L. Es-pinoza, specially brought from Buenos Aires to handle her, held the filly to a mere gallop to triumph by at least a half-dozen lengths. If Luro who says Eugenia last raced something more than a couple of months ago can bring Eugenia up to the Delaware Handicap in the same brilliant form, it should be interesting to see how she fares against such United States stars as Parlo, i Misty Morn, High yoltage, Doubledogdare, Rare Treat and other nominees.
