Lucky William Flashes Speed for Popular Tally Takes Wakefield at Lincoln And Runs Five Furlongs in :5S3/s By FRED GALIANI LINCOLN DOWNS, Lincoln, R. I., May 11. — G. R. Whites Lucky William, running coupled with the fleet Black Gallant in the Wakefield Purse, feature event on todays program, charged to the wire three parts of a length in front of Robert Gettingers The River in the fastest five furlongs clocking of the meeting, :58%, which was only two ticks off the track standard set by Silent Partner hi 1949. As a heavily backed favorite, probably due to the fact that his stablemate had previously drubbed the same caliber of opposition, Lucky William returned .60 to his backers in the • crowd of 8,782 who enjoyed a comfortable afternoon under clear skies. Third money went to Eddie Siravos Pine Echo who was a length and a half to the rear of The River while Mrs. Frank Cal-cagnis Isle of Bond earned the fourth placing. Trainer Cecil Locklear planned his strat-Contmuea on Page Seven ► - Lucky- William Flashes* Speed for Popular Tally Takes Wakefield at Lincoln And Runs Five Furlongs in :5S3/s Continued from Paae Five egy correctly by sending his double punch after the Wakefield. Pine Echo appeared the one to beat. Thus, Black Gallant was sent out to race with Pine Echo during the early part of the race with Lucky William several lengths to the rear of the burning leaders. The quarter was tray.eled in :22.M with the half in :45%. Under this fast pace, Black Gallant was the first to crack, tossing in the sponge when the fleeting leaders left the far turn. Pine Echo then raced off to a length and a half advantage, but now it was Lucky William who launched his rally. Under the guidance of Norman Mercier, Lucky William responded to stern punishment, and midway of the stretch he had collared Pine Echo. The fast pace had begun to take its toll. Lucky William still had his hands full to stave off the fast-cvlosing bid of The River, who had started a rally of his own leaving the far turn. But he could not make up sufficient ground, although getting to Lucky Williams flank before the dfstance ran out.
