I., May 11. — The handicap championship of this 49-day storm-battered session will be decided Saturday when Mrs. Rose V. Robi-doues Deep Thought and J. and P. Venutis Pipe of Peace hook up in the 0,000 Connecticut Day Handicap as Lincoln Downs concludes its 1956 racing season. There will be a hiatus of 36 days before the thoroughbreds return to Rhode Island with the start of the summer meeting at neighboring Narragansljtt Park scheduled for opening on Monday, June 25. In the meantime, the New England racing agenda moves over to Suffolk Downs next Monday where the Eastern Racing Association will conduct a 36-day meeting. Deep Thought, who will carry the top impost of 120 pounds, two more than assigned to Pipe of Peace, is being given a slight edge in the betting odds. It is expected that the Robidoue colorbearer will attract the fancy of the 25,000 fans expected here Saturday off his impressive fourth in the 0,000-added Lincoln Special. He will pick up eight pounds from his Special endeavor but will be carrying the same poundage he toted in his Springfield score. Prior to arriving here, Deep Thought sewed up handicap honors at Sunshine Park by winning three handicaps there, while shattering a pair of track records at the Tampa course. His regular pilot Norman Mercier again will have the saddle chores. Pipe of Peace has also annexed a pair of handicap victories at this session, both of them coming in the feature events the past two Saturdays. Last week he scored in the seven furlongs New London, while the previous week end saw him take down top honors in the mile and one-sixteenth of the Hartford Handicap. He appears to have reached his peak form and while having been beaten off by Deep Thought in previous engagements, indications point to a stern tussle between the two top weights in the Connecticut. Jockey Harold Keene will handle Pipe of Peace. Waldo D.
