Gallant Tonto Triumphs On Pimlico Turf Course Upsets Swivet in First of Series Of Old Hilltop Handicaps at Mile By PALMER HEAGERTY PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 11.— Making his second appearance of the young meeting and again showing a fondness for the turf course, Mrs. R. Howard Lomas Gallant Tonto this afternoon scored an upset victory in the first in a series of Old Hilltop Handicaps, designed for horses which have started for a claiming price of ,500 or less in r56. They-could have low-. . ered the eligibility clause to ,500 and Gallant Tonto still would have been eligible for the event. Getting the mile in 1:38% over the grass course, Gallant Tonto returned 6.80 to his scattred backers in the crowd of. 8,702. The successful Swashbuckler five-yeax*-old was ridden by Ray Mikkonen and finished three lengths clear of Duke Singers Swivet, with Christian B. Caldwells Parlor Pink third. The beaten favorite in the1 Old Hilltop was Mrs. Henry H. Hechts three-year-old, Just Bill, who finished sixth in the field of 10. Gallant Tonto raced closest to the pace of C. Lamar Creswells Capt. Kim during the early running and displaced that one on the final bend. Mikkonen urged his mount into clear advantage, then roused him mildly to be three lengths in the van at the wire. Swivet was always a factor ~ and held Parlor Pink safe. j The favored Just Bill probably would have been much closer had he elected to race kindly. Such was, not the case however, and he lugged in badly, making it impossible for his rider to urge him in the late running. Three Cubs, another well-. v played member of the field, was always far back, while Jiggle trailad throughout while failing to extend himself. I
