Will Command in Surprise Triumph Over War Trouble in Summertime Purse Craig Hustles Logan Colt To Front Early, Then Rides Brilliantly; Andy Jack Third By BUD LYON HAZEL PARK, Mich., June 22.— Leading for all but the very first few strides, Dan Logans Will Command registered a mild upset in the Summertime Purse at six and one-half furlongs here this afternoon before a crowd of 17,036 persons. Place money of the ,000 purse, which was fashioned exclusively for three-year-olds, went to the 2-1 choice, Mrs. George C. Whites War Trouble, with the chestnut son of Mr. Trouble holding his runner-up honors by just a neck over Frank E. Arnolds Andy Jack. It was just another half length back to Luther Sheltons Fibre King, two and one-half lengths to T. Alie Grissoms Turn Down and five more to Frank Holbrooks Riz, who rounded out the field. Howard Craig gave his fellow riders a bit of a lesson in rating in the Summertime, for after hustling Will Command away from the gate to take a clear lead through the initial quarter mile, he snugged down on the I Will colt to give him a breather to the final bend. At this point, War Trou- Continued on Page Eleven Will Command Registers Mild UpsetinSummertime Craig Puts Up Brilliant Ride To Defeat Favored War Trouble Continued from Page One ble commenced to close in on the pace-! maker and forcing Craig to let his mount out a notch and eventually go to the whip at the top of the front straightaway. The colt responded for, after allowing the runner-up to get within a head of him a furlong out, he again picked up stride to be drawing out at the end. Will Command was- picking up just his second purse of the year in earning the ,100 winners share of this pot and, peculiarly- enough, he caught a similar track condition in his other winning effort which Was here in late May when, he registered over a "good" strip. Todays course was labeled "slow" strip. Todays course was trained star required 1:22 to negotiate the course, following which he paid 0. War Trouble, the fans choice for the event and out to win his first purse of the year, had no real excuse other than he commenced to lug in lightly just as he drew up to the winner at the eighth pole. While this may have been more serious than it .appeared, it is still doubtful that he could have matched Will Command stride for stride in that final run to the wire. Andy Jack proved a bit of a disappointment, for to date the gray colt enjoyed an unblemished record for the meeting in winning two in a row. The colt was awayj slowly as per custom and did not pick up his speed until half the distance had been covered, following which he was forced to circle his opposition in the deepest part of the going.
