New England Group Asks Delay in Wheeling Sale Court to Confirm or Reject Hazel Park Offer on June 28 WHEELING, W. Va., June 22.— It was learned today that a possible upset bid by New England interests and a race against time stood today as major roadblocks toward purchase of Wheeling Downs race track by the Hazel Park Racing Association of Detroit. Hazel Park submitted a high bid of ,780,000 for the mile track at a government hearing Friday. The figure topped by 5,000 an offer by a group of New York men associated in the ownership of Yonkers Raceway. U. S. District Judge Harry E. Lowe said he would submit an offer for Wheeling Downs, which is being auctioned off to settle giant income tax claims against owner William G. Lias, but refused to name a figure. According to West Virginia law, the Hazel Park group must produce affidavits by the June 28 deadline from each of its 1,100 stockholders scattered across the country stating that they have had no ..criminal record within the past 10 years.
